Rat Rods For Sale - What Is A Rat Rod?
Rat Rods For Sale. With the recent upsurge in popularity of vintage car restoration and the popularity of a number of classic car related reality shows, the term Rat Rod has entered the lexicon of American culture. For those of you wondering what in the heck I am talking about, hold on. I will give you a little background information so it makes more sense. By the time I finish, maybee, you, will just be itching to resolve that mid-life crisis and find your own Rat Rod For Sale.
According to the so full of themselves folks at SEMA (I will not elaborate), a rat rod is considered to be a pre-1949 American vehicle which has been finished to look like it was built by a 1940's hot-rodding enthusiast. There is often no exterior top coat, with either a layer of rust or exposed metal burnished to a shiny patina. For those that are painted primer or flat black finish, is the norm. There is little or no chrome and the interior is unfinished, or unrestored.
For myself, I disdain the carefully worded minutia of the SEMA car snobs. Any year, well-used looking American car or truck can qualify as a rat rod except mini-vans (yuck). The only foreign cars I would include are mid-1970's and before VW Bugs and the older VW Micro Bus (Mobile Home of the Dead Head). The VW's have been an integral part of American culture and deserve, in my opinion, to be included.
Regarding the first appearance of the Rat Rod, the car snobs from SEMA once again are in an endless debate. However, The first appearance of the Rat Rod can be attributed to the popularization of a 32 Ford Roadster owned by Artist Robert Williams. Others dispute this fact, but, WHO CARES!!

Ford Model A History
:See also Ford Model A (1903)
The Ford Model A was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced on October 20, 1927, but not sold until December 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. This new Model A (a previous model had used the Model A name back in 1903) was designated as a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors, but not black. There has also been ongoing speculation for many years that the Ford Model A was based on the 1925 Peugeot 201 automobile as the two automobiles bear a striking resemblance.
The successor to the Model A was the Model B which featured an updated 4-cylinder engine, and by the Model 18 which introduced Ford's new V8 engine.

The Ford Model T (colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie and also the Flivver) was an automobile produced by Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company from 1908 through 1927. The Model T set 1908 as the historic year that the automobile came into popular usage. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that "put America on wheels"; some of this was because of Ford's innovations, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting, as well as the concept of paying the workers a wage proportionate to the cost of the car, so that they would provide a ready made market.Ford also attempted a "buy on time" program to aid sales, resembling that of the German Kdf-Wagen forerunner of the Volkswagen Beetle. Ford's plan was not a success, either. The first production Model T was built on September 27, 1908, at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
There were several cars produced or prototyped by Henry Ford from the founding of the company in 1903 until the Model T came along. Although he started with the Model A, there were not 19 production models; some were only prototypes. The production model immediately before the Model T was the Ford Model S Early Ford - models from the years 1903 - 1908; page 5, an upgraded version of the company's largest success to that point, the Model N. For no reason, the follow-up was the Ford Model A and not the Model U. Company publicity said this was because the new car was such a departure from the old that Henry wanted to start all over again with the letter A. As it happens, the first Plymouth car (1928), built by competitor Chrysler Corporation, was named the Model U.
The Ford Model T was named the world's most influential car of the twentieth century in an international poll. [http://info.detnews.com/joyrides/story/index.cfm?id=75 Joyrides | Car of the Century? Ford's Model T, of course]
Henry Ford-"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one-and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."

Volkswagen or, VW, is the only foreign car I would consider a rat rod. In my opinion, because of the VWs impact on the American culture and its sheer popularity, I believe this automobile deserves a special mention as a rat rod.As a rat rod, the vintage VW is easy to repair, economical, and, in many cases, still drivable when all rusted to hell. Heating and air conditioning is not a concern since both are probably inoperable in an un-restored VW rat rod. If you want an open-wheeled VW Bug, just remove the fenders - keep in mind you will lose your turn-signals and headlights. However, with some easy fabrication of some metal brackets, you can re-mount the lamps and keep your VW Rat Rod street legal.
I have a family member who is a high-ranking official in the United States Government. He is a very straight-laced and serious guy, but, he has one intersting and harmless quirk. He loves 1971 VW Bugs and split-window Micro Buses.
He has five or six vehicles with one or two of them in running shape at one time. They all look like they are ready for the car-crusher and thats exactly how he like them. His wife loves his hobby since it keeps him around the house on his days off.
Volkswagen History
The Bug has made a really big impact on American culture.
The Volkswagen Beetle, with its small body, and odd, rounded shape that resembled an insect, is an odd story of success in automobile history. The Beetle first arrived in the United States from Germany in the early 1950s. Over time, the Beetles popularity grew, creating many loving owners and fans and has made an everlasting impression on American culture.
The Volkswagen Beetle was first conceived in Germany by Ferdinand Porsche (1909-1998) in the 1930s during the Nazi era as an cheap car for the people. (Volkswagen means "people's car" in German.) After World War II, Volkswagen began shipping cars to the United States. When they arrived here, they were looke upon as certainly an oddity. At a time when American cars were big and boxy, and got terrible gas mileage, the VW Beetle turned all those standards upside down. The Beetle was small and rounded, with an easy to repair, air-cooled engine located behind the passenger compartment, and a price that was less than most American cars ($1,545 in 1959). The Volkswagen Beetle also got great gas mileage - more than thirty miles per gallon. At the same time, most American cars only got ten miles per gallon, or less. At first, the Beetle appealed to only a small portion of the car-buying public. Over time, however, the car caught on.
The true impact of the Volkswagen Beetle on American culture came in the ways they were used and in the intense devotion of their owners. One owner commented that "owning a VW is like being in love. It's a member of our family." In the early years, Beetles were rare and spotting another one on the road often resulted in a honk of the horn or a wave in fellowship. I can still remember as a child, playing a game in the backseat of my dads VW Bug where we would count the number of other VW Bugs on the highway.
By the 1960s, when Beetles were more common, they became associated with young people and youth culture. The VW Microbus, cousin to the Beetle, was a particular favorite. Rock and Roll bands could haul all their members and instruments to concerts in them. Surfers could sleep in their vans along with their surfboards. Hippies would travel around the country in them. Frequently, they hand-painted their VWs in multiple colors and adorned the back of the cars with stickers for the Grateful Dead.
Over the years, the VW Beetle remained largely the same, although variations on the basic Volkswagen theme were introduced: the Microbus, the Squareback, the Karmann Ghia convertible, and other models. After 1973, when American cars got smaller in response to the oil crisis, the popularity of the Beetle began to decline. The company ceased production for the U.S. market in 1978, although they were still produced and sold in Mexico afterward.

Ford Rat Rods
Vintage ford cars and trucks are, by far, the most common starting point for most rat rod project cars. Old rusty rides such as the Model A, and Model T are the most popular Ford models used for rat rod restoration.
If you have one of these vehicles sitting in an old barn, or rusting away out in the middle of a cow pasture, and you have no plans of doing anything with it, by all means sell it. There is a demand for these types of vehicles and it is not to hard to find someone out there willing to pay you to remove that rusty metal eye-sore off your property.
Below, you will find some interesting historical information about the Ford Model A and Ford Model T. I have also included some for sale listings with pictures to show you examples and prices of vehicles currently available.
