Rat Care

My first rat joined our family 15 years ago and taught me what wonderful, loving and intelligent creatures rats are. Back then there was little information about pet rats and I made many mistakes including keeping him as a lone rat.

Everything I have learned about rat care has been through first hand experience of loving, watching and understanding all the rats who I have shared my home with. I now spend my time helping with rat rescue and offering a permanent, safe and loving home to rats of any circumstance who find themselves in need of a family.

Although it has been a long time since I have considered myself a novice rat owner, I can still remember what it was like reading books about rat care that told me facts, instead of helping me gain an understanding of why their advice was best for me and my rats.

• Choosing your rats - You may have heard of many places to get rats; pet shops, breeders and animal shelters. How do you know which is the right one for you? How can you tell a healthy, happy rat?


• Rat Cages - How do you know what makes a suitable rat cage? There are plenty of rat cages for all kinds of rodents on the market today, but not all of them are suitable for rats. It can be an expensive mistake to make if you choose the wrong one.

• Rat Diet - What is a healthy diet for a rat? There are many rat treats available, but are they good for your rats? How often can I give my rats treats?
