Are Mirrored Contact Lenses Safe?
Mirrored contact lenses - are they safe? They are all the rage at rave store shops and parties given their shocking look and the popularity of movie sensation Vin Diesel in his role as Riddick in the movies Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick.
A wide variety of mirrored and other fashion contact lenses are now available but they have been regulated by the FDA as a medical device given the health risks posed by improper use of the fashion contact lenses.

Safety Tips for Mirrored Contact Lenses
Treat them carefully - you can't wear them like regular contacts
Fashion contact lenses are very much like regular contacts in the way they are placed in the eye and how they are removed. The similarities really end there though. While some mirrored contact lenses can be made to fill a perscription, many times the fashion lenses are for cosmetic purposes only.
The manufacturing process of getting the mirror (or other cosmetic) coating on the lenses dramatically alters the health performance of the lenses. Mirrored contact lenses significantly reduce the amount of oxygen which reaches the surface of the eye for absorbtion. What this means is that people wearing fashion contact lenses need to monitor very carefully how long they wear the lenses in order to reduce the risk of eye damage. Typically this type of lens should not be worn for more than 8 hours.
Lastly - most of these fashion contact lenses should not be used for more than one year after breaking the seal on the new lenses.

Basic Care Instructions for Fashion Mirrored Contact Lenses
This is not an exhaustive list but you should have a good idea after reading, and don't hesitate to consult your eyecare professional whenever you have questions about your eyes.
-
See your eye professional prior to purchasing your lenses. Follow his or her recommendations and consult your doctor frequently when you first begin using them
-
Always wash your hands before handling your lenses - your eyes are one of the easiest points of entry of infections into the body. Clean hands reduces your chance of eye infection (a very VERY unpleasant experience!)
-
Use the cleaning and disinfecting regimen as directed by your doctor. Your enjoyment of your fashion contact lenses will only last as long as you take good care of them
-
Never Share Your Lenses! Refer to what I mentioned earlier about eye infections!
-
Do not use faucet water on your lenses - infections!
-
Do not use mirrored contact lenses while operating a motor vehicle - your vision will be altered by the lenses in unpredictable ways
-
Consult your eyecare professional whenever you experience abnormal symptoms during or after fashion contact lens use
-
Get your eyes checked annually or as directed by your eyecare professional
-
Consider wearing thin rubber gloves when inserting your mirrored contact lenses to avoid placing finger prints on the mirrored surface
What Are the Potential Risks of Wearing Mirrored Contact Lenses
Mirrored contact lenses are like other lenses, and as a result can cause a variety of eye injuries and conditions. Lens wear can cause infection, redness, corneal ulcer and or other problems if not used and cared for properly.
Untreated infections and other injuries can lead to corneal scarring, which can lead to vision impairment. In extreme cases, corneal ulcer can result in blindness and eye loss.
Other risks include conjunctivitis; corneal edema; allergic reaction; abrasion; and reduction in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and other visual functions, resulting in interference with driving and other activities.
Always consult your eye doctor whenever you have questions about the health of your eyes.
