Why Raw? Raw plant foods are simple, easy, enjoyable, contain thousands of health-giving nutrients, and fit well with the biological design of the human digestive system. The sun is the source of all life and raw plant foods represent the purest form of transformed sun energy. There is solid evidence that a living plant food diet eases digestion, boosts energy, and eliminates carcinogens. Eating a balanced mix of raw plant foods can restore health on a molecular level by building strong cells, raising alkalinity, and detoxifying and re-mineralizing the body.

"You are what you eat" afterall. People wishing to heal themselves and the planet, should eat the most healing foods possible. What Is the Raw Food Diet Anyway? 

Are you wondering about the new raw food diet?

Raw food can be the next step in the trend toward vegetarianism and/or veganism, as well as organic concerns. This diet has been embraced by several celebrities, and there are restaurants catering to raw foodists these days. There are also many raw food recipe books available, as well as support groups and message boards galore for raw foodists, people who eat a raw food based diet.

Many find the raw food diet compelling due to dramatic weight loss stories, as well as a belief in a healthier lifestyle and body, but this is not just your average diet. It is a lifestyle change. Raw foodists point out that this is not necessarily a new diet, but that many cultures a long time ago ate most of their food raw, including paleolithic man, and eskimos. (No longer called eskimos, eskimo means eater of raw food).

The raw food diet is a diet consisting mostly of raw vegan food, which includes raw fruits, raw vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Many raw foodists think that the more their diet is made up if raw food, the healthier their diet is, and the healthier they will become. This can also be true for your pets - cats and dogs have been found to benefit from raw food diets, although cats and dogs have very different digestive systems than people, so obviously their diets should be very different from a diet meant for human consumption.

The raw food movement is in itself divided up into groups of people. Some will eat cooked food for a small percentage of their diet. Many of these people are combinations of the following groups:

Living foodists: these people follow a diet in which their food is made up of plant food in which the plant's enzymes are still active, such as sprouted seeds and nuts.

Juicarians: all of their food is in the form of home made juice

Some raw foodists will eat unpasteurized milk and some raw meats, but this can be a concern as cooking is often necessary to kill any unwanted bacteria. Temperatures need to be very high or very low to kill these bacteria, and eating food raw is an infection risk. Pasteurizing is a method of preserving milk, and unpasteurized milk needs to be very fresh to be safe.

A small group of raw foodists will not eat food that has been processed by a machine at all, including juicers, dehydrators, blenders, and/or food processors. They believe in eating food in the most natural state possible.

What are living foods?

By some definitions, raw foodist are also life foodists, but a more specific definition implies what in living foods, the enzymes are active, and are therefore considered living. It is the difference between sprouted and unsprouted seeds or nuts (sprouted seeds or nuts are living). Some people will only or mostly eat living foods, believing in the health benefits of greater enzyme activity.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, leafy green vegetables, herbs, grasses, nuts, seeds, grains, sprouted seeds, edible flowers, sea vegetables, oils, salts, spices, sweeteners, dried fruits, flavorings, fermented foods and dehydrated foods,
nut milks, ice creams, chocolates, cheeses and creams.

Raw Chocolate, Cashew Candy & Berry Vegan Pie Recipe 

This is a nice little recipe I re-vamped sometime ago when experimenting with heaps of different tastes and raw vegan desserts. It's a fully guilt free raw and healthy alternative to cooked pies, so you can eat as much as you like.

Here's how to make it . . . You'll need a few good handfuls of berries (whatever you like, I usually use blueberries & strawberries) for the Berry layer of the pie/pudding.

For the Cashew Candy layer: 1 cup cashews, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 1-1.5 Tbsp of coconut oil, 1/2 - 1 Tbsp agave syrup, a pinch of sea salt.

Next blend ingredients together in a processor until smooth (you can add a little water if needed). The idea of this candy layer is to be thick and creamy like.

For the Chocolate Pudding Layer: 1 small avocadoes, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1.5 Tbs raw cacao powder, 1-2 Tbs agave syrup and 1/2 - 1 Tbs coconut oil.

Again blend ingredients together in a processor or vitamix until smooth and creamy. Test it, and add more of any of the ingredients if you want a more rich chocolate or sweeter flavor).

Next all you have to do is layer a cashew candy layer, followed by a chocolate pudding layer, then a berry layer and repeat. Then refrigerate for an hour or so (unless you can't help but dig in straight away that is) so the chocolate layer sets.

*Note that this recipe and ingredients will only serve about 1-2 people, just double up on everything if you want to make a large pie (We only make small pies when we make this usually, or we'd eat way too much in one sitting ).

Live Raw Granola Recipe 

You can eaisly alter this recipe using ingredients you happen to have on hand: nuts, dried fruits, and seasonings such as vanilla and cinnamon. This makes a great health snack, or you can simply enjoy it at breakfast time with fresh almond milk on top!

Ingredients You'll Need::

2 cups sprouted buckwheat
1 cup sunflower seeds, chopped
1/2 - 1 cup coconut
1/2 cup sultanas
1/2 cup goji berry's
1/2 cup dried apricots (preferably soaked and diced)
1/4 cup macadamia nuts (almonds or both), chopped
1/4 cup pepetias
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon orange zest
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-2 Tablespoons agave nectar

Here's what to do with your raw granola ingredients:

1) Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
2) Spread thick on a teflex sheet on top of a mesh dehydrator screen.
3) Dehydrate at 105 for about 5-10 hours or until your desired crispness is reached.

Serve with almond milk or raw cashew cream and fresh fruit.

Raw Chocolate Bars Recipe 

This raw chocolate recipe is so easy and delish that you wouldn't believe it's a raw foodies chocolate recipe unless someone actually pointed it out to you.

Here's the recipe . . .

**Raw Chocolate Bars

This recipe came from a raw food recipe I picked up recently and adapted a little with what I had in the cupboard at the time.

It's truly a delicious raw chocolate recipe and makes a good number of bars for a couple people to share, if you plan on taking this to a gathering I'd suggest you double the recipe to share with even more friends and family (if you can resist eating them all your self that is).

Ingredients:

1 cup almond butter (or one jar)
1 cup cacao powder
3/4 - 1 cup cacao butter, melted
1 Tablespoons vanilla extract or 1 vanilla pod
1/2 - 3/4 cup agave nectar
1 cup shredded coconut
1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)

Directions:

1. Grate the cacao butter in a bowl and place that bowl on top of another bowl of hot water to melt the butter.

2. In a food processor mix the almond butter and cacao powder thoroughly.

3. Transfer this mixture to another bowl and add the vanilla and agave. Mix in well with a wooden spoon.

4. When cacao butter has liquidised, pour into chocolate mixture and mix through. Then add the coconut and sea salt.

5. Use a spoon to spread chocolate into a glass dish 20 x 20 cm approx, then add some extra shredded coconut on top if desired.

6. Put in freezer until chocolate has set. This could also be done in the fridge if you're not in a hurry.

7. Cut into squares and eat without holding back. This recipe may turn you into a chocoholic if you are not one already - So Beware my friends.

Devine Strawberry Chocolate & Cashew Cream Pie 

This would have to be one of my all time favorite raw food vegan pie recipes, unfortunately I can't take credit for the recipe but I can take credit for making it and taking it along to any party's I go to - everyone is always very surprised at the multi-layer style and taste of this pie. Here are just some of the words used by others to describe this taste sensation: 'devine, creamy, gorgeous, I love it, teach me how to make it' and with rave's like that it should be one of those raw pies you should keep on file to send people to heaven every once and a while at any kind of gathering or dinner party you go to.

I usually change the ingredients to what fruit is in season at the time, sometimes add fresh mint or essence into the chocolate candy layer and use my own almond, coconut and date basic pie base crust (as I am somewhat addicted to almonds) but other than that I base it on the recipe I found here on the Raw Inspiration Blog.

Hi Rebecca, very interesting info, thanks alot! I've tried switching to a raw food diet multiple times. When I tried this I felt great, very light and healthy, however after 5 or 6 days, I feel like I have endurance. I can't run as far or exercise as long. Any advice or help you can offer? Because when that happens I feel I have to abandon it, that something is missing?

Great job! I juice raw veggies every morning and let me tell you it's miracle juice! I used to have bleeding gum's, acne, painful menstrual cycles.....and just after a couple of weeks of raw veggies it was gone. True story! It's amazing. God gave us everything we needed before refined sugar and processed food ever came into the picture. Humans made processed foods, God made the raw veggies, you tell me which is better?
