Raw Food Stores

Top Shops for Raw Food Online

Raw veganism refers to the practice of eating primarily fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and sprouts that can not have been heated (cooked) to more than 40 degrees C (104 degrees F). This temperature limit is still contested among specialists, so you will likely see different figures quoted in different places. The premise is the same, though: By not heating the food to a temperature higher than the human body itself can withstand, the idea is that the foods' nutritional content, along with its enzymes - the life force in food - will be preserved.

If you are really starting to care about your health and the environment, eating a diet that consists of as much fresh, organic, local produce as possible makes good sense. To do that you shouldn't need to travel far to meet your needs. The best places to shop will be your local farmers' markets for your fresh fruits and veggies. If you want to expand your culinary horizons, you may need to look beyond your local markets to eat a more interesting mix of raw foods, however. The raw food world is expanding, and with it have popped up a plethora of online shops offering healthy food products that are not so easy to come by, such as truly raw nuts and seeds, dehydrated foods, raw cacao products, "superfoods," and a whole array of raw supplements.

You do not have to consider yourself a 100% "raw foodist" to reap the benefits of consuming the foods these retailers sell. This lens gives an overview of the top shops selling raw foods and products in sync with the healthy, eco-friendly, raw vegan lifestyle. I don't recommend any store over the other, to be perfectly honest; in fact there is no one store that meets all my raw food shopping needs and desired price range, so I use a variety of them!

Oh, and you'll find that a lot of these super raw food stores carry appliances, books, DVDs, and personal care products to support the raw vegan lifestyle, too!

Sunfood

Sunfood Nutrition is owned by infamous raw food expert David Wolfe. The Sunfood brand offers high quality... at relatively high prices. I have never shopped directly at this store, but I have purchased foods from the Sunfood line, and I can indeed speak for the quality and taste. The raw cacao products, like the cacao powder and sacred chocolate, are amazing. Sunfood is based in California (hence the sun).

High Vibe

HighVibe.com

High Vibe is a store I have frequently used, due to their diverse stock, reasonable prices, and decent service. They have gone out of their way to accommodate my special needs as a consumer from Asia many times, and have been prompt in replying to my emails. They carry their own line of basic raw goods like nuts, seeds, and cacao products, and also carry a wide range of supplements. High Vibe is based in New York, NY.

Upaya Naturals

Upaya Naturals is a Canadian company, and as a patriot, I would shop at this store more often, but alas, the Canadian Postal Service charges ridiculous overseas shipping costs (I live in Japan), pretty much doubling the cost of my purchase! This is a real shame indeed, because this store rocks. Even with the exorbitant overseas shipping fees, I once paid almost half the amount for a bulk size container of local brand of raw agave syrup compared to what I would pay for getting it here in Japan. Upaya has an incredible selection. If you are on your raw food journey in North America, check out this store.

Raw Guru

Organic raw and living foods!

Raw Guru is a smaller organic raw and living foods store. Their website is clean and easy to navigate, and they are fully into the social networking stuff (twitter, facebook, and their own blog AND 'raw food friends' community). They produce a newsletter and a delicious must-have, chocolate recipe e-book.

Love Street Living Foods

Love Street Living Foods is a charming company with very friendly service. They've been super fast at getting back to me by email, seemingly anticipating my questions. They also carry their own line of goodies, and run regular campaigns with great discounts and other benefits such as free samples.

Natural Zing

Natural Zing boasts three decades of research and consulting with numerous nutritionists and vegetarian specialists, and say they have gathered the best products to develop your natural energy and health, your "natural zing." Staff members have been 90 - 100% raw for years and can therefore better assist customers with their transition to raw, and with raw lifestyle questions.

Raw Food World

Raw Food World was started by raw food celebs Matt Monarch and Angela Stokes. These two are so adorable you just can't help but want to buy from them. They also run a TV show and radio show you can access from their site. Angela Stokes transformed her life on the raw food diet, transforming from a state of obesity and sadness to slim health and happiness. Check out her Live Lightly program for more information.

Navitas Naturals

Navitas Naturals only carry their own line and their products are widely available through other retail distributors of raw and/or organic whole foods. You can shop for Navitas products directly online, though, which is why I have included them on this list. They have a fantastic line of dried berries, nuts, seeds, cacao products, and lesser known, nutrient-rich yummies like lucuma, acai, camu, maca, and mesquite. I usually have at least one or two bags of their products somewhere in my kitchen.

Essential Living Foods

Essential Living Foods

Essential Living Foods believes in a "farm to table" model of sustainable business, in which "small farmers are supported by fair prices, the earth's ecology is protected by organic, sustainable farming techniques, generous donations from the sales of the products goes back to source communities, consumers benefit from our great tasting, healthy foods, and our employees and partners have a rewarding, values-driven place to work and earn a living." How can you not support a business with those ideals?

Vivapura

Vivapura is based in Arizona and is run by Chris Whitcoe, an energetic gentleman I had the pleasure of meeting at Elaina Love's raw food chef training in Thailand, 2011. Vivapura specializes in superfoods and aims to provide the purest, highest quality raw, organic, ethical, plant-sourced superfoods available anywhere on the world market. The company supports the nurturing the vibrant well being of body-mind-spirit for every individual, and contributes integrously to society - through sacred commerce, ethical business practices and community support. Clearly, their business philosophy is also a "path to consciousness."

Raw Pleasure

rawpleasureLive in Australia? The raw food movement is big down under. Check out fellow Squidoo lens maker RawBill's juicy-looking site. He'll get you what you're looking for.

Super Green Foods

The online outlets below deal specifically in their own relative brands of raw green superfoods, and my favourite chocolate protein supplement. Especially if, like me, don't have access to kale or can't be bothered with juicing your own wheat grass, these powder and frozen supplements make for great additions to smoothies. I always have a least a jar or package of some product or another below.

Raw Spice Stores

Taste Spice Link Mountain Rose Herbs

Taste Spice and Mountain Rose Herbs are my choices of retailers whenever I cannot get something where I live here in Japan. They offer quality, natural herbs and reasonable prices.

Equipment

blenders, juicers, dehydrators

You can do fine on a raw food diet without any special equipment, but ask anyone who has invested in a great blender such as the Vitamix, and they'll probably tell you it was one of the best things they've ever bought for the kitchen. It took me three broken blenders before I broke down an bought one. In Japan, it was almost twice the price, but no regrets. I use it every day. Juicing is more of a pain the the rear, but when I go on juice feasts, it's essential. I've owned a variety of juicers and the quality changes in accordance with price. Omega is a good brand. If you are new to juicing, starting out with something cheaper may make more sense. However, regarding blenders, if you can afford it, I recommend getting a Vitamix. Dehydrators are nice pieces to have, and in this case, the Porche of dehydrators is the Excalibur, but I actually do fine with a second-hand Namco unit.

I'm not a raw fooder, I am a vegan -- and when I went to California, I didn't know where to get food and I looked on the 'net and found a raw food restaurant and the food was great -- I got a raw-sagna -- and it was great!
