Welcome to Raw and Living food for pets. The picture is of my best friend, Crystal, who has taught me about feeding the raw food diet . Now she is happier and healthier than I ever thought she would be.  In this lens I will share with you some of the tips I have learned over the past 8 years feeding my animals the Raw Food Diet.  Now, you too can turn your dog or cat into a Rawsome Pet !!

Why Raw?

Most people LOVE their pets and want to give them the best. For Crystal and I this diet is that BEST and here's why:
1. Nearly all the commercial dog foods contain undigestable ingredients and euthanized animals, because the industry is not regulated. This is true even with most food recommended by a Veterinarian, as they are in the business of treating SICK, animals.
2. This diet allows the animals to eat the way they were originally designed to eat, not the way humans have conditioned them to eat.
3. If you are on the raw diet too, you both can enjoy the same basic meals. This allows for a closer bond to form between you and your pet.
4. The Raw Diet reduces or eliminates; allergies, dry skin and rashes, arthritis, gas, bad breath and inflammation anywhere in the body.
5. The diet increases health, immune system function, fertility and quality of life.
6. This raw diet increases energy, alertness and joy!
7. Consuming organic fresh fruits and vegetables helps heal the planet and future generations by supporting conscious, healthy farming practices.

Real Life Benefits

Some of the benefits of feeding the raw diet, for you and your pet.

  • Eyes brighten and clear up, no more running or gook in the corners
  • Allergies improve and disappear
  • Hair or coat becomes softer, shinier and healthy
  • Energy and vitality increase
  • Fluid in ears disappears
  • Bad breath freshens and teeth are healthier and whiter
  • Hydration increases, and the need for drinking water decreases
  • Innate senses sharpen
  • Immune system functions increase their ability to fight off disease and infections
  • Visits to the veterinarian decrease or become non existent, saving you time and money
  • Heart and muscle mass improve and strengthen
  • Stools reduce in size and become bio degradable
  • Gas expulsion becomes a thing of the past. All food is completely digestible. No more silent embarrassing smells from the dog in front of your guests.

The Basics

  • Always use as much Certified Organic produce and meat as possible, for both you and your pets.
  • Feed a mix of at about 60% produce to 40% meat, fish, poultry.
  • Be sure to vary the type of meat, poultry and fish you feed and include organ meats too like liver, heart and gizzard.
  • Feed either raw turkey or chicken necks everyday, ( after they eat their regular meal ) to provide a good source for calcium as well as some chewing exercise for the jaw muscles. If you do not feel comfortable feed these an option is raw eggs. Put 1-3 organic raw eggs, shell included into a blend and liquify. Add to your pet's food about 3 times per week.
  • Provide raw meaty bones, such as knuckle, for dental health and chewing enjoyment, at least 2 times per week.
  • Never feed onions, grapes, raisins or chocolate. Some people also include green beans, tomatoes, avocado and garlic.
  • Feed enough food volume so the pet can eat all it wants and leave a little in the bowl. For my 60 lb dog I feed about
1/2 lb meat with 2-3 cups vegetable and fruit mixture. Experts say to feed about 1-2% of their body weight per day.
  • Consider adding supplements such as: Pure Synergy or other green powder, coconut oil, fulvic minerals, sea minerals, sea vegetables such as: kelp, wakame, sea letuce, dulse, etc, and a tocotriene complex for anti oxidants and flavor.
  • Be sure your pets always have fresh pure or filtered water available. I use ionized alkaline water.

Simple Everyday Food

In your food processor place a variety of vegetables and one or 2 fruits. These are what I normally choose from; carrots, zucchini, broccoli, peas, yams or sweet potatoes, celery, spinach, lettuce, sprouts, collard leaves, parsley, cilantro, beets, fennel, kale, apples, bananas, mangos, papayas, young coconut flesh, zucchini, sea vegetables and garlic. Do not use onions. Pick several of these or other vegetables and fruits and puree together until smooth. Always use plenty of green foods. When you are ready to feed, add your meat of choice, about .25oz per 1lb body weight for an active dog, and any supplements you are feeding to a portion of this puree, mix well and serve. Feed enough volume that they walk away with some left in the bowl. If you don't have time to make your own every day there are some good sources of pre-made raw food. Remember, fresh is ALWAYS better!

Easy Treats... Apple chicken and banana chicken...

The first step

You will need a couple pounds of raw organic chicken, either dark or breast meat, deboned. Take 2 pieces of chicken and pound several times until flat. Cut into long strips about 1/2" in width and approximately 3-4" in length.

Step 2

Cutting the fruit filling

Cut your apples, bananas or mangos. They work best if you cut them about 1/4" thick, and the bananas a little thiner. You can use small delicious, fuji, braburn or your favorite sweet apple. If you use mango, I find it easiest to cut the mango along the seed on both sides. Then take a spoon and scoop the meat from the skin and cut into slices like the apples.

Step 3

Assembling the treats

Take a piece of apple, mango or 2 banana slices and wrap a 4" strip of chicken around it. Then place meat ends down on dehydrator tray. Repeat with remaining chicken. Each pound of meat makes about 30 pieces.

Step 4

The drying

Continue repeating the first 3 steps until you have all the chicken cut and wrapped. Then dehydrate the treats at 105 degrees, about 7 hours for white meat and 10 hours for dark meat.

Your homemade fresh doggie treats!!

The finished product

Here's the finished product. If your dogs are like mine, they can't wait until it's time to eat them. Crystal loves these so much she stands at the dehydrator until I open it and give her some, ready or not!! These keep in the refrigerator for about a month, and are a great road trip snack or training reward.
