Making Books Part of a Healthy Childhood

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy, because growing up healthy means growing up with books. During visits to the pediatrician, children get new books and parents get advice about the importance of reading aloud.

Through the Reach Out and Read (ROR) program doctors and nurses can provides tools and resources to help promote children's developmental skills and later school success through reading.

Reach Out and Read is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The Importance of Early Literacy and Early Intervention

Reach Out and Read to Your Children

Researchers have found that children who live in print-rich environments and who are read to during the first years of life are more likely to learn to read on schedule.

Other findings include:
    * 16% of parents of children age three years and younger do not read at all with their children, and 23% do so only once or twice a week.

    * Percentages are even lower among low-income families, whose children face the highest risk of literacy problems.

    * Reading difficulty contributes to school failure, which increases the risk of absenteeism, leaving school, juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy - all of which perpetuate the cycles of poverty and dependency.

    * Families living in poverty often lack the money to buy new books, as well as access to libraries. Parents who may not have been read to as children themselves may not realize the tremendous value of reading to their own children.

    * Educators and developmental psychologists have long considered reading aloud to children important in helping those children develop early literacy skills.

This lens provides a lot of the motivation some parents need to start reading to their children. I have lensrolled it on my lens at http://www.squidoo.com/readingaloud_to_all_ages. As important as it is to read to young children, it's also important to keep reading to children, especially as a family, as they continue to grow up.
