Here are great ways to teach family members about the joy of reading while also helping children stay sharp during the summer break from classes. This is for all ages.
Gather The Family Together
Sit in a circle and let the youngest member of the family sit in the center of the circle.
For this example we are using a great children's book called "Teaching Your Baby to Sign" by Lora Heller.
Take the book and begin to read to the family (while keeping your focus on the youngest child).
Read a page or two and then pass the book to the next family member to your left (this will be your center child's right-which is a natural flow direction for reading).
Each family member will take turns as they pass the book around and 'Entertain the center child'.
From a nurturing perspective your family and your child will develop a sense of belonging and core family support.
Here are some book recommendations for your Family Nurturing Circle - Reading to very young children activity
Select the reading level of the youngest child in the family (even if the child can not read - such as a toddler or baby, select material that will be of great interest to the youngest participant).

If the youngest member of your family is reading, select the books that they are comfortably able to read. The activity is based on 'fun', so, by keeping the reading level manageble, you can focus on the 'fun' part of the togetherness activity.

Just because your family has grown, you do not need to disregard this activity. Keep it light and fun, and any age adult, child, or teen will have a good time. The primary message for this age group is "let's see how long we can entertain ourselves", no cell phones, no televisions, no interruptions.
It is a bit like an intellectual staring contest. If this is a new activity for your family, you will be setting an example for them to carry on when they have their own children.
Before there were televisions, the family would sit around the living room and talk to each other. No phones, no electronics, just people having meaningful conversation with each other. A little bit of this concept comes into play when a family reads together.

The Results...
From an educational perspective your family will come away with educational support foundations that are essential for a life long love of learning. They will also develope core interpersonal skills that will last a lifetime in their relationships with friends, co-workers, and their own families.
In simpler terms this is really a fun activity.
Not to mention the simplicity of an activity that will be teaching your family about the 'best things in life'.
