Open Your Heart with Reading!
I've been astonished throughout my adult life to meet people who say, "I'd read, I just can't find the time for it." For someone like me, this is like saying, "I'd breathe, but I just can't find the time for it."
So how do we open people's hearts to, and with, reading?
In this new book, Open Your Heart with Reading, I share how my heart was -- and continues to be -- opened through literature, through my interaction with the people and places and times and ideas I have found in books. But I don't stop there: I want to help others find the same joy and pain and amazement and delight in literature that I have found. So reading this book is in many ways an interactive experience. Every chapter is followed up with suggestions that the reader can do, then and there, to enter into a reading experience highlighting that chapter's theme.
I also talk with other people - lots of other people - about reading and how it's opened their hearts.
Because my focus is on opening the heart and letting the words in - "I took the book from the shelf and I let it speak," as James Keelaghan says - I'm not addressing books as genres, and I don't make a distinction between "high" literature and pulp fiction. This book is like my bookshelves: eclectic and full of life.
More about this fabulous reading book!
(or: good reasons to buy it!)
So why should you read a book on ... reading?A good question. If you're addicted (as I am) you may want to share others' thoughts about your addiction. Or you may be curious about what a librarian, a playwright, a disc jockey, and a mystery author share (and, yeah, reading comes into it).
Or you might want to ignore me altogether and focus on the brilliant man who wrote the foreword. Slam poetry champion Regie Gibson has been complemented by none other than the late and very great Kurt Vonnegut, and for good reason: when he says his poem about Jimi Hendrix, you'd swear you were hearing him. Hendrix, that is. Regie's talented beyond my talents, and if he thinks this book is good, then it really must be!
Or you may be interested in the statistics: 90 million Americans are functionally illiterate. That's a third of the population. That shouldn't happen, and I have someone in the book who will tell you how you can help.
Mostly, though, I want you to read this book if you remember the romance of your first love affair. If you remember the excitement of the first time you dared do something dangerous. If you remember the happiness of your first real joy. Because this book will bring all of them ... and more ... back to you again.
