What is RIF?
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.
Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.
All RIF programs combine three essential elements to foster children's literacy: reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement of choosing free books to keep.
RIF's accomplishments are due in part to the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and thousands of individuals.

RIF's Dear Colleague Campaign a Success!

Thanks in part to the efforts of 11,000 RIF friends writing more than 45,000 letters and e-mails to Congress, 150 U.S. Representatives and 49 U.S. Senators signed the Dear Colleague letter urging support for continuing RIF's federal funding. That's more than a third of the House and nearly half of the Senate! This is a critical milestone for RIF's funding campaign. Thanks to all of you who contacted your representatives on behalf of RIF!
We will keep you updated as our efforts continue.

URGENT: Save RIF's Funding
FROM CAROL H. RASCO, President and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental
Please ACT NOW to help RIF continue to build support for our funding. Send an e-mail to your members of Congress asking them to support RIF during the appropriations process.
We are asking Congress to appropriate $26 million to fund RIF's book distribution program for some 4.6 million underserved children and families in fiscal year 2009.The funding is critical to support our reading motivational programs at nearly 20,000 locations nationwide.
Please e-mail your members of Congress today and ask them to support RIF's funding. Many people have responded to our earlier alerts. Because of your action, many U.S. Representatives and U.S. Senators signed the Dear Colleague letter which closed on Wednesday, March 12. Once the letters themselves are finalized, the complete list of signatories will be posted to our website.
Share this message with six or more friends who will also contact their members of Congress. We will continue to update you with any specific requests. Thank you for your support!
