Books, Books and More Books!

This lens is for anyone who enjoys curling up with a good book. If a day without time to read, is a day you consider wasted, then check out what's on my bookshelf.

My tastes are broad and cover a wide variety of genres. The books I've listed here are ones I recommend.

What should YOU read today? Well, I just happen to have a few ideas....

Fiction or Non-Fiction?

Before we get started, there's something I'd really like to know!

Do you prefer FICTION or NON-FICTION? I read and recommend both, but what you think matters and will impact the number of each type of book I'll add to this lens.

Charlie Wilson's War

Non-Fiction

I'm only a couple of chapters in but am enjoying this a great deal. I confess to having a bit of an obsession with Afghanistan, I worked on the file while working in politics here in Canada and have a great understanding of the subject. So far, I'd recommend it. I haven't seen the movie (and generally don't if I've read the book) and have no plans to do so.

Atlas Shrugged

Fiction

My all-time, overall favourite book. The story of the man who stopped the motor of the world and what happens when he does. Definitely not a book for those very left of centre in their political views. In fact I was holding this book in the elevator at the Canadian International Development Agency, where I worked in a political capacity for the Conservatives, when I was told by a couple of the aid workers how offended they were by this book.

Ayn Rand, founder of the discipline known as Objectivism leads us through the strike, when successful individuals refuse to contribute their leadership, scientific discoveries, research, greatness to the world. At over 1000 pages this is a journey, not a quick read but one that is well worth it. I need to buy a new copy, mine is dog-eared from dragging it everywhere.

24 Hours

Fiction

I'm a huge fan of Greg Iles and tried to figure which of his books I would review first. I've read them all. If you're thinking of buying your first Iles book, 24 Hours is a great place to start and to get an idea of just how thrilling his writing is.

I don't want to give the plot away, but suffice to say that if you are a fan of suspense novels, this will captivate you from the very start. What happens when the perfect family becomes trapped in the perfect crime? You won't be disappointed

Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die

Non-Fiction

I received this book as a gift for my birthday and carry it around it my briefcase. It's beautifully photographed and chock-full of information on some 40 destinations, some of which I knew of and many that I didn't. This is a dream book, if you're the type of person who likes to put things out into the universe fully expecting them to come back to you (yes I'll review The Secret at one point here), then this is a great book to use.

The Girls

Fiction

Rose, with occasional help from Ruby, narrates this wonderful work of fiction about life as craniopagus conjoined twins.

Witty, funny and poignant, I was hooked on page one and found the story, told from the twins perspective, both original and intelligent. Not many of us could write about life as a conjoined twin, but Lori Lansen captures Rose's spirit and challenges in such an honest voice that I sometimes forgot it is a work of FICTION.

If you're looking for a change of pace, I highly recommend The Girls for your next read.

Never Say Diet: Make Five Decisions and Break the Fat Habit

Non-Fiction

Chantel Hobbs weighed over 300 pounds when she made the decision to lose weight and get fit for good. If you're like me, you've read countless diet and exercise books. This is the first one I can truly say is different.

What I like most about Chantel's book and "program" is that major diet changes don't factor in for 30 days. The goal is the get into the exercise "habit" and set up a routine before tackling the food issues. Her five decisions, Be Truthful; Be Forgiving; Be Committed; Be Interested and Surrender make a lot of sense.

Chantel is quite religious and her faith plays a big role in her success. Although I'm not, I do believe in some type of "higher power" so this is not an issue for me. The book is not preachy at all, so even those for an aversion to mentions of God, should have no trouble.

I've got 25 pounds to lose (not 200 thankfully) and I'm charting my progress on another lens. Click here to visit I'll keep you posted on whether it works for me or not.

Patriots

Fiction

An oldie but a goodie. I picked this one up at my local public library but you can grab it on Amazon if you like to keep what you read.

This book by the author of Favorite Son is a thriller from start to finish and has a great twist at the end that made me search back through the pages to see how I had missed it.

The story about U.S. strategic defense and what can happen when rogue soldiers take matters into their own hands, Patriots is a filled with much military jargon and strategy. Not normally my first choice of subject, I nevertheless found this a book that kept me up reading well into the night.

The Suicide of Reason: Radical Islam's Threat to the West

Non-Fiction

I first read this book when I was working for the Canadian government and recently picked it again. If you have any interest in understanding the significance of Canada's military role in Afghanistan or the U.S. battle in Iraq, this is a must read.

Through historical examples, Mr. Harris explains how our need to remain "rational actors" has left us not only unfamiliar but extremely vulnerable to the very nature of mass fanaticism.

In our arrogance we believe that the root cause of fanaticism is the failure to modernize and that if only we could create mirror images of our own secular and capitalist societies, that fanaticism would disappear.

Not everyone in the world wants what we have. This book is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the times we live in.
