Do you worry about the amount of personal detail you put online? A Five News investigation has revealed how networks of high level gangsters around the world are using the internet to target your money. Five's Jonathan Samuels reports.

Fraudulent use of UK credit and debit cards last year cost the UK 535 million pounds according to the banking industry. It's up by 25%. So who is stealing our money, and how are they doing it? In a Five News undercover investigation we have infiltrated the world of the gangsters. We secretly filmed a woman money laundering in the UK, and confronted her criminal partner-in-crime in Nigeria. But our report begins on the internet.

If your financial details are stolen, the chances are they'll end up on an illegal website. We found numerous websites which advertise details of stolen credit and bank cards. But that is not all we found. We discovered criminals trading mobile phone numbers, email addresses, pin numbers, passwords, date of births...all belonging to unsuspecting members of the public. The first you or I know about it is when our account is suddenly missing a lot of money.

Our details can be stolen in many ways - a waiter in a restaurant could make an illegal swipe of your card, you could be filmed tapping in your pin number maybe at a petrol station or shop, or criminals could hack into insecure computers where our details are stored. When a criminal has those details he may choose to use them, or sell them on. Many of the card details end up in places where criminals are hard to trace such as Nigeria.

We spoke on the phone, and online, to a top level gangster in Nigeria who calls himself Henry. Using stolen bank details from members of the British public he withdraws cash from current accounts.

Then he has a problem. He can not get the cash put into his own account as that is too easily traceable by the police. So he chats up British women on the internet, befriends them and persuades them to take the cash on his behalf. They are effectively laundering the money. They then wire it or send it through the mail and keep a cut for themselves.

Through our investigation we secretly filmed a woman in Liverpool admitting doing exactly this. She sees it as a fairly harmless way of making a few hundred pounds.
Try telling that to the hundreds of thousands of us who have our identities stolen every year, and the banks who are losing hundreds of millions of pounds.

We spoke to Henry after secretly filming and he denies taking part in the scam, saying his name was being used by someone who'd hacked into his account.
