Real Estate Marketing

For the past few years, the real estate market has been riding a high.  During this time, homes and condos were selling before you could even get a sign in the ground.  Marketing was the last thing that real estate agents seemed to worry about (or they thought that they WERE marketing themselves, and that was why they were so busy).

In 2007, things have changed. The over aggressive buyers market has evaporated.  And now, real estate agents who haven't been in the market long enough to weather a few down markets are scurrying to improve their marketing.  It's not only 'back to business as usual'; for the inexperienced real estate agent, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get into the game of marketing yourself and your properties.

Of all the avenues available, anything you can do in-person is going to go the farthest.  Nothing can supercede the immediacy and comfort level of one-to-one interaction.  However, the Internet is also an excellent potential source of online marketing that, when leveraged, can provide excellent benefits.

Below I've compiled some information about marketing your real estate online and off.

Real Estate Blogging

Blogging about real estate from your perspective is one of the easiest, cheapest (it's free) way to market yourself.

Blogging? You're a real estate agent. What does blogging have to do with your real estate career? You have a hands-on business; 1-on-1, face-to-face. Blogging? How could it promote your real estate career? LOTS OF WAYS. First off all, people look for information on the Internet. If you agree with that, continue. If not, this may not be a palatable article for you. Second, to find information, people use search engines. Again, if this sounds incredulous, move on. Lastly, search engines love the content on blogs. Blogging is marketing, and its marketing you.

So let's put that all together: People are looking for real estate information online, and they find it by searching. Search engines love blogs, so blogging is a good way to get exposure to those people.

That's it! Wait a minute, wait a minute. Let's be a little more prescriptive than that before you run out and start your blog. Here are a few blogging tips for you real estate pros and newbies alike out there:

1. Get a blog at an established site like WordPress or Blogger. Unless you are technically inclined and beyond real estate you want a second life as a server administrator or programmer, use a hosted solution from WordPress or Blogger. It's free, and it eliminates all the hassles you'd need to understand to set one up on a server of your own.

2. Blog about what you like. It's hard to talk about something if you're not passionate about it. It's even less likely that you'll say anything that would resonate with anyone either. Your real estate blog should cover topics that are relevant to you and your market.

3. Blog locally. You service a specific place, blog about the conditions, trends, and property in that place. If you're in Austin, Texas, and people wanting to buy property in Alaska are the only traffic you get because all you want to write about is how interesting the market is in Alaska, you likely won't get many potential new customers.

4. Let people know you have a blog. If you send out a real estate report monthly, let people know what is happening on your blog, and how they can find your blog.

5. Tell it how it is, and tell it without the corporate polish. Blogging is a more sincere method of communication than a corporate web site. It's not a soapbox for marketing axioms either. Blogging is more conversational, and has a tone that is personal and credible. Be sure your blog is too!

6. Blog regularly and as often as you can.
