Sing Pretty (Not!)
Ah, music soothes the savage beast ... or possibly gives him a headache if he has to listen to some of this stuff! I sing in the Women's Chorus of Dallas and our director is constantly admonishing us to "Sing Pretty!" There seem to be some people who aren't getting the message, though.
Just to show you what you won't hear at a TWCD concert (ever!), I've assembled some of the worst singers ever. I was looking for people who put themselves in the public eye, be it karaoke, American Idol auditions, church solos - anything that puts them out on a stage. Vote in my categories or add your own favorite examples of bad singing! (If it's bad enough, it might just get bumped up to an "official" ballot.
What Makes for Bad Singing?
Beautiful music is sometimes in the ears of the listener, but there are some specific things that make for bad singing that almost anyone can agree on.- Choice of song - More than just whether I like your selection, this has to do with whether the song is appropriate for your voice. Is it in your range, does it fit with your voice style, do you have the stage presence to carry it off? Even a good singer can have a bad singing day if they choose the wrong song.
- Bad voice - A rather subjective criteria, but some people, even if they're on pitch, just don't have pleasant voices to listen to. Think Tiny Tim and his ukelele.
- Off key - Sadly, some people just can't carry a tune. Although, I must admit, I enjoy enthusiastic singing from these people. Enjoy yourself! But know that if your tune-carrying bucket has a leak, you're likely to end up in a bad singing category.
- Badly sung - OK, so you have a good voice, maybe you've choosen a good song. What else could throw you into the bad singing crowd. Singing with the wrong tone (think operatic on a country & western song), in the wrong tempo (think The Impossible Dream in quicktime), straining to hit notes or carry phrasing and many more issues.
Now on to the music!! (Don't cover your ears, no matter how badly you want to!)

Think you've found something worse?
If you think you've got something worse than the ones I've found, add it and we'll see how the voting shakes out!
Karaoke, Anyone?
National Anthem Disasters
The U.S. national anthem (or Star Spangled Banner) isn't an easy song to sing (but you should at least know the words). The Women's Chorus of Dallas pulls it off with elan at many an event. Maybe they should call us the next time there's a need for the anthem to be sung rather than asking one of these people.
I Love to Sing!!
Who cares if you're any good?
Totally Not Child Stars
OK, sometimes it's cute when a kid sings and sings badly. But there is a line between "awwww" and "oh my God, when will it end?"
