morals without religion
life without religion is a better life indeed, free your mind from the shackles it places there.
people are evil, is religion?
Their logic is infallible: god exists; god is infallible; he created us; if we do god's will, we'll go to heaven; god asked us to worship him; if we worship him - we go to heaven...
You may have noticed that god is not capitalized. This is no mistake.
The problem is not their logic. Most anyone can string together some logic to justify what they believe... but that precisely is the problem - people justifying what they believe with logical arguments based on a false premise.
But I digress this minor point, it pales to comparison to the horrors carried out in 'his' name, whether or not 'he' exist, these events have happened.
The Crusades...
The Inquisition...
The Holocaust...
The list goes on, but off of the top of my head, these are some of the worst.
Even if... (and that's a big if) all of these atrocities were masterminded by individual psychopaths, as opposed to true general consent at the time. Religion remains, as it was back then, the single greatest justification for such violence and intolerance.
What if though that religion isn't at fault for these massacres in the name of it? what if it was a few crazed psychopaths masterminding everything...?
They still used religion to get people on their side.
Nothing other than religion has this power. The power to let an individual join a mob of believe and give up all personal responsibility for their actions. "Well, god asks this of me, this is alright even though I can not see why killing people is right, but if god said it was, that's what I'll do"
When a person is put into a position of such deep and powerful control over people, such power corrupts... always.
I have seen this amongst misters. The mere concept of someone preaching salvation, that they know whats right for you, even if you don't agree, is a special evil reserved for misters and psychiatrists.
People use the religion to justify what they already believe. We don't gain morals from holy text. We pick and choose what we want to believe. If you holy text is actually holy, is the word of god. Then everything must be true. You can not obey one rule and leave out another... "Stone insolent children to death" that sound familiar? it's from the bible. but so is this.
"But as for these enemies of mine who didn't want me to be their king - bring them here and slaughter them in my presence!" - Jesus from Luke 19-27
and no I'm not taking that out of context. he is telling his disciples - to kill... yet when we talk about jesus he is always loving and gentle and forgiving... why is that?
listen: I don't know what's right for you, but I can impart some wisdom... religion clearly isn't right. not even Buddhism. ever take a stroll around Tibet lately?
I'll write more about this subject later, but I urge you: if you hate me for writing this, if I anger you, if the mere verbal attack on your religion is enough to incite violence and malevolent feelings, then I pity you for your religions intolerance. I pity you for the fact that religion has caused (or you use religion to excuse) hate.
