RealPlayer SP has improved so drasticly compared to the older versions, its light on resources, doesn't install any spyware or adware plus it has so many great features and doesn't overtake file types without your permission.

I listen to a lot of livestreams, especially the BBC radio five live.

They broadcast on .asx(wmp) and .ram streams but I always use the .ram streams using RealPlayer.

With the right speakers, the sound quality even at 64kpbs is immensely better.

Its a decent application that does what it promises. period. The only reason it wont get my 5 stars, is you 'd still expected to pay some $$$ to get its full features.

Otherwise. functional stuff.

Let's see: Not bloated, but it gives you the ability to download .flv from sites such as Youtube, save them, and view them.

Mobile video goes social and portable with RealPlayer SP

Real Networks have launched free RealPlayer SP; a cool new application which makes it easy to download, transcode and share online videos as well as transfer them to mobile devices.

The application looks impressively straightforward to use. Once installed, it integrates with the user's web browser and facilitates the downloading of video clips from websites such as YouTube that might otherwise only be available in streaming form. Even before selected videos have been downloaded, they can be shared with others on Facebook or Twitter. Once downloaded to the user's machine, videos can be easily deployed to many popular devices including mobile phones and smartphones (including iPhone), portable media players and games consoles. The application takes care of all the necessary transcoding to convert the video into the optimum format for the target device and also handles the transfer of the file to the device.




In a company press release, Rob Glaser CEO of RealNetworks, said:

RealPlayer SP makes it easy for anyone to get online video onto their mobile phones and other favorite portable devices

The application seems well-timed and clearly hopes to ride some of the social networking hype curve with its Twitter and Facebook integration. Any application that lifts restrictions on where video content can be watched and allows users to easily move content between their devices is likely to prove popular, particularly as the latest generation of mobile devices typically have large, high quality screens and plenty of storage capacity.

Video formats supported by the application include h.264, Mpeg4, Windows Media, QuickTime, and, of course, RealVideo. There is also an option to convert videos into audio-only versions, presumably for listening to on older devices that do not support video playback such as older mobiles and MP3 players. The beta version of RealPlayer SP is available for free from realplayer.com and the full version will cost US$39.99.
