Have You Seen Reaper Yet?

Reaper is a hilarious new supernatural comedy/drama on the CW about a guy named Sam Oliver. Sam is a college drop out working at The Work Bench (think Home Depot) with several of his friends from high school. He has no real goals or dreams. He floats through life with no direction or motivation, but he is about to get real motivated - by the devil.

Reaper

Flash back to before Sam was born. Mr. Oliver is dying. Enter the devil who offers him and his wife a deal - give him the soul of their firstborn child on his or her 21st birthday, and he will save the man's life. They agree! Satan and the Oliver's sign a contract (in blood!) and the devil keeps his part of the bargain. Mr. Oliver is cured!

The Oliver's try to outsmart Satan by taking precautions that will prevent them from having children, but the devil has other plans. He convinces the Oliver's doctor to tell Mrs. Oliver that she is unable to become pregnant. They are relieved, but what the Oliver's don't know is that their kind doctor is a compulsive gambler who has amassed a rather large gambling debt. The devil promises to erase all the doctor's debts if he tells the Oliver's one little lie. Surprise! Mrs. Oliver becomes pregnant and eventually delivers a healthy baby boy - Sam.

Now flash forward to Sam's 21st birthday, He learns that his parents have sold his soul to the devil and he has to become Satan's bounty hunter! His job is to catch souls that have escaped from hell and return them to the depths from which they came.

Being the slacker that he is, Sam bulks at his new responsibility of being the devil's bounty hunter. The devil, of course, does not give him a choice. Either Sam performs his duties, or his mother forfeits her life. Given his options, Sam reluctantly accepts his new position.

More on Reaper

To perform his bounty hunter duties, Sam needs two things - a vessel to catch the soul in and a portal to return it to hell. The devil delivers these vessels to Sam on a soul-by-soul basis and they come in a variety of different forms depending on the soul that he has to capture. The portal to hell is found any place that is considered "hell on earth." In Sam's case, the closest portal is at the local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). Along with his new job, Sam also acquires a few cool powers, including telekinesis. When Sam uses it properly, this ability comes in handy for catching the souls.

The escaped souls are demons that were once human and were sent to hell for the various evil deeds that they committed while alive. How do they manage to break out of hell? Apparently, hell is overcrowded and managed by other condemned souls who are unhappy with their positions, so they do a terrible job of policing the souls under their supervision. Consequently, souls are allowed to escape. This is where Sam's bounty hunter duties come in.

The devil is not big on sharing information important to the assignment, so Sam is typically left bumbling around trying to figure out how to catch his assigned soul. With the help of "Sock" and Ben, his two friends from The Work Bench, Sam usually makes several hilarious attempts at capturing the soul before he succeeds.
