The Light of Reason

We either don't use Reason, or we use it just to justify how screwed up the world is but, "oh well." Reason is not the same as reasoning. I'm not talking about analyzing or trying to figure things out. I am writing about Reason as a human sense organ, a part of us that recognizes truth. Most of what Reason says is obvious, however, it doesn't give a rip about things like greed and power . . . so we don't pay attention or we say, "Things are the way they are."

***

Reason transcends beliefs.
Reason is impersonal and respects life.
Reason is a universal "language"

Reason with a Capital R is

seeing what makes sense
and acting on it.

WHAT THE . . ?

1. EMOTIONS ARE A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, therefore

2. ALL PEOPLE KNOW SORROW, ANGER, FEAR, GRIEF, PAIN, DESPAIR, and

3. WE AVOID THE ABOVE FEELINGS AS IF OUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT, YET, WE KNOWINGLY CAUSE OTHERS TO EXPERIENCE THOSE SAME FEELINGS.

A Ritual To Read To Each Other

by William Stafford

If you don't know the kind of person I am
and I don't know the kind of person you are
a pattern that others made may prevail in the world
and following the wrong god home we may miss our star.

For there is many a small betrayal in the mind,
a shrug that lets the fragile sequence break
sending with shouts the horrible errors of childhood
storming out to play through the broken dyke.

And as elephants parade holding each elephant's tail,
but if one wanders the circus won't find the park,
I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty
to know what occurs but not recognize the fact.

And so I appeal to a voice, to something shadowy,
a remote important region in all who talk:
though we could fool each other, we should consider-
lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark.

For it is important that awake people be awake,
or a breaking line may discourage them back to sleep;
the signals we give - yes or no, or maybe -
should be clear: the darkness around us is deep.

"Reason is a harmonizing, controlling force rather than a creative one."
~ Bertrand Russell ~"

about Reason . . .

Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense and plain dealing.
~ R. W. Emerson ~
  • Reason is tuned into what is common to all of us, this thing we call life being the most prominent. Is it really love to care about some people's lives but not others? We wouldn't fear for our own well-being if we lived with concern for every creature's well-being.
  • Reason doesn't reason; it knows. With Reason we recognize ourselves in others, without the filter of beliefs or opinions. Pain is pain, and joy is joy, whatever culture one belongs to.
  • Believing in "A" makes "A" true for the believer of "A", but not for believers of "C" or "Z". Yet, all believers (that's us) have physical life and emotional experience in common. Reason, being the thinking aspect of compassion, knows what makes sense for the well-being of all (As, Cs, and Zs).
  • Our emotions and feelings are subjective (personal) reactions to a person, situation or thought. Much human behavior is governed by our emotional reactions to threat, real or imagined. Now really, if we want a more peaceful world, does that make sense?
  • Emotion is energy that we largely waste. If as a whole we put respect for life first, we would, as a whole, have less to fear. Feeling more secure, anger, possessiveness and "being right" would loose value.
  • We cannot expect the world to be more humane unless we live our lives that way.
  • Reason is not logic or analysis, although they may play a part. Reason is our sense organ for what is true for all and therefore good for all. It is not separate from love, beauty or joy. Reason is a light of compassion.

The Assault on Reason

Drawing on the great political philosophers of history and his lengthy career in government, Gore contends that the loss of a genuine public forum in the age of radio and television has led to the decay of democracy. He delivers a serious critique of the United States tempered by hope and faith in the restoration of checks and balances.

Reason with a Capital R has,

above all, respect for all life.

Reason Does Not Complicate

Following Reason is simple, except when its complicated and hard. Its simple because there's nothing complicated about respecting all life. Its hard when it pushes us to make a choice we'd rather not make or set aside differences we'd rather cling to.

Respecting life, especially your own, means that smoking doesn't make sense. That's simple. But choosing to quit, and following through on that, has proven to be hard for most.

Making sure no child goes to bed hungry. That's life speaking through Reason. So far, Reason hasn't been enough incentive for the world to come together and make it happen. Individuals and communities work to make lives better. But it stands to Reason that it be a global endeavor.

Looking Completely

And there is the vast expanse of the mind which we never touch or know; that mind is vast, immeasurable, but we never touch it, we don't know the quality of it because we have never looked at anything completely, with the totality of our mind, of our head, of our nerves, of our eyes, of our ears.

~ J. Krishnamurti ~

TRUE BLUE ROSE

This eternal rose is always a bud,
Always unfolding, always fully open;
Reason recognizes its perfume
Unsullied by assume or justification -
We call it love, are fed by its beauty,
May trust the scent to point
precisely north,
A course for Life,
one bold breath away.

~ J. Brehmer ~

Something To Consider

Our capacity to go beyond the machine rests on our power to assimilate the machine. Until we have absorbed the lessons of objectivity, impersonality, neutrality, the lessons of the mechanical realm, we cannot go further in our development toward the more richly organic, the more profoundly human.

~ Lewis Mumford ~

Belief and Reason

THE SIGNS BELOW LOOK DIFFERENT BUT THEY MEAN THE SAME THING (international recycle signs)

There's nothing wrong with having beliefs. Its difficult (impossible?) to live without some. Even if you say there is nothing to believe in, you believe there is nothing to believe in.

Beliefs do not need to cause division, but they do.
1) Beliefs cause division when they are based in fear, are about survival, power, righteousness, and the old perennial: greed.
2) Beliefs cause problems when people (single or groups) identify with their beliefs. "If you trash my belief, you trash me!"
3) People, or groups of people, that identify with the same belief(s) are easily manipulated or controlled.

Here's where Reason comes in, and has always come in. Even though I'm not aware of all religious, philosophical or spiritual practices on Earth, they boil down to the same thing: love, forgiveness, the golden rule, respect for life, or whatever name you have for it. People have known this for how long?

Beliefs can maintain diversity-in-wholeness when they are based in Respect, Reason, Love, etc. The costumes we wear, the rituals performed, the objects used, DON"T MATTER. We need to stop living as if they do. That is just good sense.

It is a contradiction in terms and ideas,
to call anything a revelation
that comes to us second-hand,
either verbally or in writing. Revelation is necessarily
limited to the first communion;
after this,
it is only an account of something . . .
for it was not a revelation made to me . . .

~ Thomas Paine ~

LOL

If Reason is to be of use, it has to include humor. But how can that be when many things requiring Reason involve suffering.

I have a couple thoughts on this. One is that if Reason didn't allow for a sense of humor, we could perish by Reason's light. Another is that life is funny. Everyday, I find that life is funny. Humor helps us see ridiculousness instead of blindly succumbing to it. Laughter keeps our energy moving. Laughter penetrates difference and brings people together.

It is necessary to be guided by what is common to all although many a man lives as if he followed his own private reason.

Just As the Winged Energy of Delight

by Rainer Maria Rilke

Just as the winged energy of delight
carried you over many chasms early on,
now raise the daringly imagined arch
holding up the astounding bridges.

Miracle doesn't lie only in the amazing
living through and defeat of danger;
miracles become miracles in the clear
achievement that is earned.

To work with things is not hubris
when building the association beyond words;
denser and denser the pattern becomes -
being carried along is not enough.

Take your well-disciplined strengths
and stretch them between two
opposing poles. Because inside human beings
is where God learns.

OBJECTIVE REALITY

ALL PEOPLE SHARE THE REALITY OF HUMAN PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS. THIS IS OUR SHARED OR UNIVERSAL REALITY. HOW CAN WE COME TOGETHER OVER ANYTHING ELSE? NEEDS FOR FOOD,SAFETY, WORK, AND LOVE, ETC., ARE WHAT DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS CAN UNDERSTAND AND AGREE UPON.

SUBJECTIVE REALITY

ALL PEOPLE HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTIVE REALITY WHICH WE MAY SHARE IN PART WITH CERTAIN OTHERS. BUT WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SAY WHAT PERCEPTIONS OR BELIEFS ARE TRUE FOR ALL. PERCEPTIONS AND BELIEFS ARE NOT A GLOBAL REALITY, EXCEPT WE ALL HAVE THEM. THEY'RE BASED ON CULTURE AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.

Another Thought

If we want a more peaceful world, government by individuals or groups that put self-interest first needs to stop. The basic needs of all people, all life for that matter, is the business of a government truly for the people. In other words, putting life's common needs first must become more important than who's right and who's wrong, who's the mightiest or richest. Its a stretch, but its also a possibility.

"Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it."
~ Thomas Paine ~"

Ignorance or Stupidity?

If you don't realize your gullibility, that is ignorance. If you do realize your gullibility and rationalize it away, that's stupidity. I know because I've been stupid many times.

RATIONALIZING is not Reason. Rationalizing is finding (or making up) reasons to not stick with Reason. Its a way to avoid something we don't want, or assure the continuation of something we do want. Its throwing away self-responsibility, or not rocking-the-boat. Rationalizing is a form of fiction. It strips us of our personal power and sense of worth.

done, like what we like and make
up reasons for it afterwards."

War and Reason = Oil and Water

Douglas MacArthur Quotes . . .

"The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."

"Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear - kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor - with the cry of grave national emergency."

"Our country is now geared to an arms economy bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and an incessant propaganda of fear."

"A better world shall emerge based on faith and understanding."

"Could I have but a line a century hence crediting a contribution to the advance of peace, I would yield every honor which has been accorded by war."

"It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificially induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear."

"I have known war as few men now living know it. It's very destructiveness on both friend and foe has rendered it useless as a means of settling international disputes."

Sticky . . . But Not Stuck

Beliefs aren't static; they result in behavior. So when you watch your own behavior, you are seeing your beliefs at play. If a poor black home-less person asks you for a handout at night and your response is to say nothing and walk away, consider all the beliefs that could be at work: "Black is dangerous, the night is fearful, strangers can't be trusted, any response will get me entangled, poor people are lazy or crazy or weak, to associate with them means I will be one of them one day." When you stop defending the behavior of your beliefs, they become less sticky. You regain freedom to think and believe in a new way.

Chuck Clayton explains some of the things we are doing right so we can repeat the process...and...he points out the missing pieces of the puzzle that lead us to stupid decisions and disasterous policies. This is must reading for anyone that has to make decisions.... (S. Tyra, amazon reviewer)

While written for the general audience, younger readers will benefit the most from it because the author has systematized routine . . . (M.A. Piatak, amazon reviewer)

The good news is the author takes the reader through many examples of how to make good decisions by thinking through them in a step-by-step manner. (M. Jepperson, amazon reviewer)

"An unexamined belief can be described
as a habit of mind.
Treating a habit as a belief
can bring you all sorts of trouble, if it leads you in the wrong direction."

When the Shoe Fits

Ch'ui the draftsman
Could draw more perfect circles freehand
Than with a compass.

His fingers brought forth
Spontaneous forms from nowhere. His mind
Was meanwhile free and without concern
With what he was doing.

No application was needed
His mind was perfectly simple
And knew no obstacle.

So, when the shoe fits
The foot is forgotten,
When the belt fits
The belly is forgotten,
When the heart is right
"For" and "against" are forgotten.

No drives, no compulsions,
No needs, no attractions:
Then your affairs
Are under control.
Your are a free man.

Easy is right. Begin right
And you are easy.
Continue easy and you are right.

~ Chuang Tzu ~

Really intereting lens. The world definitely needs more reason of the kind you talk about here. It's a subtle distinction between reason as clarity and the mechanism of reasoning, and it was good to see you make it. Sometimes people want to do things for a reason all the time when they should be doing things more just for their own sake.
