Why Would Anybody Want to Ride a Bicycle?

Why do so many people ride bicycles these days? Cycling is hard work, gets you wet in the rain and cold in the wind. What about all that traffic? It's dangerous, isn't it?

Although there are many people who hold these views there are many reasons why cycling is a worthwhile pursuit. Read on to discover some of the wonderful advantages of riding a bicycle, both as a means of transport and as a very enjoyable recreation. The questions above will also be answered.

Cycling is Good for You

Cycling is a very healthy exercise. It is generally considered to be second only to swimming.

Cycling increases your heart rate and tones your muscles. It is also gentle on your joints.

Cycling is Economical

It's almost free!

With rising fuel costs cycling has to be good news. On short trips the time difference between using a car and using a bike is far less significant than on longer journeys. When you use a car for short trips the engine is not at it's optimum heat for much of the journey which wears your engine out faster and burns even more fuel per mile than on a longer run. The bicycle has to be the better choice.

"Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride."
~ John F. Kennedy

Cycling is Good for the Environment

It is well documented that motoring causes pollution. Even with todays technology cars pump out carbons which are detrimental to the environment. On short journeys this is even more relevant as you car is not running at it's best.

The bicycle is pollution free and has to be the sensible choice.

Isn't Cycling Hard Work?

It can be hard work, but the more you do it the easier it becomes.

If you are new to cycling it is important to start with very short journeys. Just do a little bit each day and gradually you will find yourself getting fitter and able to enjoy longer rides.

"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle."
~ Ernest Hemingway

What About the Weather?

If you go out cycling in the rain you will get wet! However you can reduce this a bit by fitting mudguards (fenders) to your bike and by wearing the correct clothing.

Many cyclists choose to ride only when it is dry. I used to call these people "butterfly cyclists" but I have to admit that I'm a bit like that myself now :-)

Is Cycling Dangerous?

Like many activities cycling can be dangerous. However it is possible to ride a bicycle regularly and still keep yourself safe. It is important to make sure you are always visible especially at night. It is also worthwhile to use cycle-routes and less busy roads whenever possible.

It is important to concentrate on what's around you and to always be aware of other road users, but this also applies to motorists.

As a precaution the wise cyclist will wear a helmet.
