Reasons Why I Hate To Smoke

Ranked #8,734 in Culture & Society, #179,261 overall

Welcome

Most people don't talk about how much they hate to smoke. I am currently writing this at the age of 18 and I have never smoked in my entire life. Honestly, it has never really appealed to me and I still don't know why it appeals to anyone.

This is my story and my reasons of why I hate to smoke and why smoking isn't worth it. Maybe, after you read this you will feel the same way too. If not, at least you know my story and my reasons.

How It All Started

When I was little, I used to love going to the country in Jamaica, to see my cousins. They are one year older than me and are one of the closest cousins that I have to this day. They not only lived with my uncle and aunt, but they lived with my grandparents also.

My grandmother took care of everyone in the house, while my grandfather spent his time on his farm, planting and taking care of his crops. I remember when I came up to the house with my family, I would sometimes have to hug him ore say hi. I really didn't mind that, but there was just one thing stopping me from being around him for a long amount of time. He was a smoker.

I remember my mom saying that he used to smoke from a long time ago when she was little. At that time, I could tell because he smelled strong of smoke, mostly after he had just had a cigarette. He smelled so strong that, well from my memory, his clothes weren't completely white. Even in my grandparents room, I could smell his clean clothes with a hint of smoke in it. But you should know, it wasn't all of the times that he smelled strongly of smoke, but when he did, my senses did not seem to like it one bit.

Not only did I hate the smell of the smoke from cigarettes, but I also hated the smell of anything that caused pollution. If I could smell car exhaust from another car when I was in my Dad's car, I would literally time myself to see how long that I could hold my breath, and if I couldn't hold it anymore I would then use my shirt to prevent any bad smoke from entering my lungs. At those times, what was going on in my head was fear of getting second hand smoke or ending up in the hospital.

The hospital, is the third reason for my distaste to smoke. I don't have a phobia where I cannot be around it, I just hate how damaging it could be to my body. I have honestly, NEVER been admitted to a hospital. Ever! I came out of one, but I can't recall of going in one in my entire life and I want to keep it that way. Right now, there is the fear that if I haven't been in the hospital now, then I will most likely be in one in the future. That fear for that, helped influence me to stop my breath whenever any bad, polluting smell came my way. Sewage, gas, car exhaust, gasoline, you name it. I avoided it all.

His Habit is My Health

My grandfather's smoking is the main thing that motivates me today, not to smoke. When I was 12 years old, I was given the news that he had died. This was shocking to me, in my mind, because besides his smoking, he was fit and skinny and really never seemed weak at all. The only reason that he died was that he had smoked for such a long time that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

My grandfather was a good man who smoked. Him passing away, gave me the conclusion that I would never smoke because it was not worth it. He lived long, BUT he could have lived much longer. If he hadn't smoked, maybe just maybe, he would have been able to hear that my uncle, his son, was getting the married. Unfortunately, my uncle Mike never got the chance to tell him. But knowing that he is somewhere in heaven, I am sure that he knows.

I am not happy for his death and neither is my lovely mother. But, I thank him for being a role model and an example for me, when it comes to the downfall of smoking cigarettes. That downfall being MY LIFE. I love life and am not ready to accept death so cigarettes will never be apart of it. Ever.

What is Lung Cancer?

" Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lung. Normal lung tissue is made up of cells that are programmed by nature to create lungs of a certain shape and function. Sometimes the instructions to a cell go haywire and that cell and its offspring reproduce wildly, without regard for the shape and function of a lung. That wild reproduction can form tumors that clog up the lung and make it stop functioning as it should. Because of the large size of the lungs, cancer may grow for many years, undetected, without causing suspicion. In fact, lung cancer can spread outside the lungs without causing any symptoms. Adding to the confusion, the most common symptom of lung cancer, a presistent cough, can often be mistaken for a cold or bronchitis. "

Lung Cancer: Myths, Facts, Choices--and Hope

A 5 star book on Amazon, this comprehensive manual on lung cancer is a must to have. Wernick, Henschke, the chief of the division of chest imaging at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, provides a medical perspective on the disease, while McCarthy, founder of the Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education (ALCASE) offers support for those afflicted as well as their caregivers. From the outset, McCarthy makes clear that the tendency of family members as well as some health-care professionals to blame smokers (nonsmokers are also diagnosed with lung cancer) when they contract lung cancer not only leads to guilt, but may actually discourage some people from seeking adequate treatment. The authors describe the many forms of lung cancer and their treatments, which include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and alternative therapies. They explain how to apply for clinical trials as well as the benefits and risks of participating. Since earlier detection improves the chances of a cure, the authors recommends the still controversial CT scans for those at high risk for lung cancer (i.e., former or current smokers). This excellent resource details how patients can learn to cope with the physical problems resulting from some treatments, how to sustain themselves emotionally while fighting the disease and ways to navigate the health-care system. It is an excellent resource to have on your bookshelves.

What You'll Be Missing Out On

How To Manage Peer Pressure or Stress

It is really difficult for people not to smoke when they are under stress or peer pressure. But, there is only one way to truly prevent it. That is, having confidence in yourself. The people who smoke, smoke when they are stressed out and are in a bad mood. They use cigarettes as some sort of therapy. Usually, in the beginning, people smoke because they are unsure of themselves and of who they are.

If you were confident in yourself, you wouldn't be thinking about smoking to make you cool or fit in. If you were confident, you also wouldn't be thinking about smoking because your co-workers or boss smoked or because you need a break from work and home. Being confident in yourself would be you not caring about using drugs to make you feel better as you are human and know who you are and the things that you stand for. If you were sure that smoking was not for you, you would not do it. It is usually that unsureness of yourself and what you want, that truly pushed you to try a cigarette in the first place.

If you had the confidence not to smoke you would still fit in. Fitting in is not doing what everyone else does. It is being respected by others who feel that you know who you are and are confident in what you want in life. Some smokers don't have those qualities.

So have CONFIDENCE in yourself that you can quit this deadly habit. There are a billion other things in this world that you can do that is healthy and better to do, besides smoking and using any other drugs.

It Could Still Happen

I may hate to smoke, but I know that there is still a chance that I could try it. If I did, I know that it would be very easy for me to resist trying again. This is only because my body has such a strong distaste for it already, that it would take something huge to really change that. One cigarrette won't. I am human so I cannot say that I will 100% never try one. BUT, I am 100% sure that I will NEVER become a smoker.

Only someone with a strong distaste for something can withstand trying it only once without trying it ever again. If you know that you don't, then DON'T EVER SMOKE. Your body is too vulnerable and you could easily get addicted to it.

QUIT NOW!!

If you've already tried one cigarette and then another and now 3-5 packs a day, then you have a problem. You need to quit NOW!! You are put on this world to live and not to kill yourself! Think about your kids, your family, your friends and your self. Smoking is not just a bad habit. It is SELF ABUSE. Abuse that you are intentionally doing to yourself, knowing the consequences. You are not better than a cocaine addict or a prostitute. You all pretty much have the same mindset of ignorance and that "you can't stop". Well, YOU CAN.

If you've read this page, I hope that you have opened your eyes to the realization that you are killing yourself and the people around you. If you want to relax, go and do something fun. Smoking is not fun. It's TOXIC.

QUIT while there's time left.

A Great Book On How To Quit

The Easy Way to Stop Smoking: Join the Millions Who Have Become Non-smokers Using Allen Carr's Easy Way Method

Amazon Price: $8.98 (as of 06/04/2012)Buy Now

This book has been given 5 stars by 641 people on Amazon. The most that I have ever seen. Only 17 people gave a poor review. Now if that doesn't convince you that this is a great book, then I am baffled myself.

Allen Carr's innovative Easyway method-which he developed after his own 100-cigarette-a-day habit nearly drove him to despair-has helped millions kick smoking without feeling anxious and deprived. That's because he helps smokers discover the psychological reasons behind their dependency, handle the withdrawal symptoms, avoid situations when temptation might become too strong, and stay smoke-free. Carr discusses issues such as nicotine addiction; the social "brainwashing" that encourages smoking; the false belief that a cigarette relieves stress; the role boredom plays in sabotaging efforts to quit; and the main reasons for failure. With this proven program, smokers will throw away their packs for good.

Some Ways To Quit

  • 1Get a Hobby

You could get a hobby of something you love to do and haven't done in a while. Sometimes you stop doing that due to the new changes occurring in your life. Don't let smoking be your hobby. It would kill you.
  • 2See a Therapist

If smoking is not the main problem and you think that you need psychological help for you to stop, then see a therapist. Seeing a therapist is the bravest thing that you can do in saving yourself. Not a lot of people have the courage to do that. Just try it out and see what happens.
  • 3Get Support

Sometimes a person gets their best support from their family members. If so, ask them to prevent you from smoking at all times, no matter what. Even if you want to. That way, in time, you will be able to not smoke on your own.
  • 4One Step at a Time

Sometimes people cannot handle just quitting smoking instantly. They could do it one step at a time, by cutting down the amount of cigarettes that they would smoke in a day for each period of time. When you are down to one cigarette, your lack of urge to smoke will be very low.
  • 5Laser Therapy

Sometimes people use laser therapy to help them from smoking. The laser helps to shorten your urge to smoke which after a couple more sessions, you will be smoke free.

I smoked when I was in my final year of university, but it was more to be cool with my friends. I hated it from the beginning, so I'm glad that I never picked it up after I graduated. Now I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Glad that you don't smoke either and I'm sure you can use this to influence other young people not to smoke.
