Reblooming Daylilies - Hemerocallis

Everblooming Daylilies

They might be called perfect perennials, but dayliles do seem to have one big downside; their short-flowering season. Unless, that is, they are reblooming daylilies. These relatively new hybrids, which began appearing in the 1990s, will follow a first flush of flowers with many more sometimes all summer long right up to the first frost.

Sometimes, they are called everblooming daylilies, recurrrent blooming daylilies, continuous blooming daylilies, repeat-flowering daylilies, or even - mistakenly - extended daylilies, which actually should refer only to daylilies whose flowers open for at least 16 hours a day.

Hemerocallis Going Bananas

Yellow Reblooming Daylily

This is a popular reblooming daylily with quite large (4" 10cm) fragrant pale yellow flowers. The first flush appears mid-season, followed by smaller flushes into September or even October.

Going Bananas is diploid, semi-evergreen and diurnal. Scape height is 17" (59.5cm). Like its parent, Happy Returns, it will tolerate some shade.

Spider Daylilies have long slender petals and an exotic dainty appearance.

Dark Red Spider Daylily

Striking rust-red spider daylily with a yellow starburst center. Long slender petals are twisted and recurved. Flowering begins midseason late, and Stoplight is also diploid, dormant and diurnal.

Scape height is 36" (90cm) and flowers are 4" (10cm).

Hemerocallis 'Azure Wings'

Reblooming Spider Tetraploid Daylily

Introduced in 2005, 'Azure Wings' was the first ever tetraploid bicolor spider daylily, and it's a beauty. Large spidery purple and green flowers (11.5", 29cm) are held on tall strong scapes (41", 102cm).

It's also evergreen and diurnal. Main bloom season is early-mid, with further re-blooms throughout the summer.

Green Reblooming Spider Daylily

Green Inferno is amazing lime green daylily with long back-curled petals and a dark green heart. Flowers are large - 7.5" (19cm), appearing first early-mid season and then reblooming.

Green Inferno is also diploidy, dormant and diurnal.

Hemerocallis Aerial Display

Maroon, Peach and Yellow Daylily

Tricolor daylily with peach and dark red petals around a yellow center. Petals are spidery and very long - flowers are 9.5" (24cm) wide.

'Aerial Display' is also evergreen, fragrant, tetraploid and diurnal. Flowering begins extra early. Scape height is 43" (107cm).

    I am a daylily fan and have about 125 of them. I just purchased Strawberry Field Forever yesterday and it's a rebloomer. Some of the rebloomers won't put on a second flush of flower here in Michigan. Our season is just too short.

    Interesting lens! I too love dayliles and have four different varieties in my perennial garden --- I will be keeping my eye out for these re-bloomers this spring. :)
