Make and Receive Calls on your iPod Touch

Last december, I was visiting my brother in San Antonio, Texas. He was working a lot those days, and we have not seen since I arrived from Italy. I was on my own, and I was supposed to call him every 30 minutes to see if he had finished the job and pick me up. To his surprise, I called him the first time and told him: "Hey, when you are ready, just call me to this number .... I will answer it on my iPod Touch!"

Just if you are wondering: NO, you do not need a jailbroken iPod Touch to do this!

If you have an iPod Touch 2nd generation, you will need to get an external microphone to make it work.

Of course, I need to thank the free WiFi connection at Austin Capitol! A great place to visit by the way...

For my SIP account I went to callcentric. I got my SIP number easily by registering from their home page.

By the way, if you add some credit to your callcentric account, you can also make calls from your ipod touch!

The SIP client I am using here is MIXphone.

The MIXphone SIP client is an iPhone application which enables access to any VoIP/SIP service like IP PBX'es or VoIP service providers. You can install it from the iTunes Store.

Just insert your callcentric username and password, and set "callcentric.com" as server.

For the free number I have used ipKall. They only have 4 different area codes (do not complain... it's free!): 206, 253, 360, 425.
