Recently Published Lens List

Ranked #5,463 in Squidoo Community, #364,288 overall

This lens show you how to add a list of your most recently published lenses to a lens, or to a blog by using a customised newsfeed. It will take you less than 2 minutes in 5 easy steps.

The standard Squidoo lensmaster newsfeed (RSS) display lenses in lensrank order which isn't want you want if you want to highlight your most recent squidooings. I've written a utility to reorder it for you and show you how to add it to any lens you want. I use it for example at the top of my lensography to showcase the lenses I have published most recently. (There is an example showing my Recent Squidooings further down this lens.)

Here's How

Go to the Squidoo Lens Builder Link

This link will take you to a Yahoo Pipe page but don't be frightened. In the middle you will see an input area like the image above this section.

Enter your Lensmaster Name

Enter your Squidoo lensmaster name instead of mine (Kate-Phizackerley). By default the feed will return all the lenses you have published in the past month but you can change the Publication Period from "1 month ago" to "1 week ago" or "10 days ago" or whatever you fancy if you don't want 1 month.

It's easiest just to leave it and it should give a reasonable number of lenses - remember you don't have to show them all.

Click on "Run Pipe"

That will run the pipe and create your own customised newsfeed.

Click on "Get as RSS"

The browser window will change to show your new newsfeed - check it has your items. If it hasn't then you probably mispelt your lensmsaster name, so go back and try it again, making sure you include any dashes. When correct, copy the address from your browser's address bar - this is your own personal newsfeed.

Add to Squidoo

Finally, add it to your Squidoo lens using an "RSS: Add your blog" module. The URL address of your special newsfeed goes in the "What URL would you like to pull RSS from?" box. I also prefer to change the option to display everything available rather than just the title, but that is up to you.

If you prefer, you could add it to your blog.

Warning: newsfeeds don't update instantly so don't worry if a lens you have updated in the last hour or so doesn't yet show up in the feed. Be a bit patient!

New Version Soon!

I am testing an exciting upgrade which can a) filter your recent lenses by subject and b) apply formatting to the feed. I'l Squidcast when it's ready for release. Version 1 will continue to work so you don't need to wait if you want to press ahead.

There's an updated version of the utlity which includes formatting for the Gone Camping theme. This is also much easier to implement - there's no longer any need to visit Yahoo Pipes. Versions for other themes will follow soon.

I also have a version in testing which allows you to filter your lens list - eg to just show all of your Music lenses. That'll be coming out soon as well once I have added formatting to it.

In the meantime, if you want an easy-to-implement recent lens list for the Gone Camping theme you are in luck!

Update Frequency

Updates aren't instantaneous. There are two sources of delay. Firstly, Squidoo doesn't update the lensmaster feed instantly - I suspect it is only updated once per day during the cycle to update lensranks. Also, there is a delay between updates on the RSS Module within the lens. So the list may be 24 hours or more out of date, depending when in the cycle a reader views your lens. If you need faster updates than that, then I'm afraid that you'll have to do something manually.

There is also an issue I have noted in the Tick Tock module which fails to see the correct date. I'll investigate and update the Pipe. If you favourite this lens, I'll send a SquidCast when I have it sorted.

Also, some people have suggested using something similar out of SquidUtils. Personally I don't like SuidUtils because a) I don't iike browser add-ins and b) I don't like what SquidUtils does to the Squidoo dashboard, but I mention it as an option in case you are a SquidUtils fan.

Subscribe to RSS

I find this works really well on my lensography so I can show a list of my most recent publications. You can also add a link to your lenses so that your fans can subscribe to the feed and never miss one of your updates! I have burned mine through Feedburner so that I can track subscriptions and other stats.

For the Geeks

If you just want to use it, you don't need to know how this works, but for the techies who wish to understand, and perhaps customise it, this is how it works.

It relies on a Yahoo Pipe. Firslty that uses YQL to pull in the feed of lenses, using a String Builder to build the YQL string. Next some regex converts the full text date to a YYYYMMDD format which is compared with a input date (with a default of "1 month ago") in the same format, discarding anything older than that. It's also worth noting that I use YQL rather than the easier Feed component as the pre-packaged feed is limited to 50 items. I obviously want my tool to work for Giant Squids so I have used YQL which avoids this limitation.

Finally the remaining list of lenses is sorted to show the most recent first.
