Image CC on WikipediaThe very basic butter sugar flour cookie is also known as shortbread cookies. This cookie is commonly made with one part sugar, two parts butter, and three parts flour.

The shortbread cookie originated in Scottland in the 1100's. The "term" short means crumbly, and thus refers to this buttery cookie's texture. The bakers chose to call this cookie "bread" rather than "buscuit" (or cookie) to avoid paying a government tax that was in place at the time for biscuits.

Shortbread cookies are typically white with maybe a slight golden tinge. It is cooked at a low temperature to avoid browning.
