Toddler Recipes: Feeding the Little Darlings
Looking for some recipes toddler will love?
Children's eating habits can cause a lot of stress in the family. Children need food to grow, but how much is necessary? How much variety is important?
Toddlers are famous for using food to assert themselves. Tasty and fun toddler recipes can help divert their attention from food as power struggle.
Some children eat too much junk food and don't get enough exercise. The parents of this child may worry about childhood obesity.
Other children refuse to eat at all, and their parents worry about how that child will get the fuel she will need to grow and to develop properly.
Stress, stress, stress. This usually makes the problem worse. Take a deep breath. Relax. Let's tackle the problem.

Childhood Food Issues
Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!
Why some children refuse to eat is a mystery! Many, many parents have struggled with this problem, so you are not alone!
First of all, never make food a power struggle. A young child will often pick up your worry about food and use it as a way to manipulate you or to get a reaction from you. Keep calm.
Offer her a variety of foods in tiny portions. But don't force her to eat. If you take all of the emotion out of your meal offerings, she will not use food as a way to control. Put out several vegetables, fruit, meat, etc., and let her choose which ones to eat. If you vary her options over the course of a week, she will get a variety of foods.
Keep portions small so that she doesn't feel overwhelmed and then offer her seconds if she wants more.
Things to consider: a baby grows very quickly in the first year, but then her growth slows down a bit and she may not eat as much. This is normal.
A child also models her eating habits on yours. If Mom and Dad both eat a wide variety of foods, she will do so as well.
Remember, your job is to decide what to offer her and what kind of food to make available and when it is offered. Her job is to decide how much of each food to eat.
Sometimes a food needs to be offered about 17 times before a child will eat it!
The more she can become involved in preparing the food, the more likely she is to want to eat it.
I hope you find this helpful. Sometimes children go through these temporary food jags, but they eventually get over it. Keep confident. Food is fuel. She will eventually eat what she needs.

What Have You Got for Ingredients in Your Refrigerator?
The beauty of this activity is that it is infinitely variable, depending on what ingredients you have on hand. Think outside the box here. You may even be able to sneak in things your child has never considered eating, like parsley, because, well, because it just looks like hair!
Ingredients
- bread slice or half an English muffin or bagel
- cream cheese or peanut butter or other spread
- something round for eyes: cucumber slices or grape tomatoes or sliced banana
- something nose-like: celery or carrot stick or cherry tomato or broccoli floret
- something mouth-like: half slice of pepper or orange or zucchini
- something hair-like: sprouts or lettuce or grated carrot
Instructions
Place the bread item on the plate and smear on the spread. Prepare the veggies and fruit ahead of time and have them laid out in bowls or saucers. (Be sure to cut any tomatoes or other small things that could cause your child to choke.)
Let the child arrange his or her face as she sees fit. You can make one, too!
