Switch your energy supplier, change your mortgage deal, shop online to find the best deals and why not even "grow your own"?
Plan ahead where possible and make a list for the supermarket, greengrocers or butchers. Don't be tempted by "BOGOF" offers unless you know you will use it or store it. Stick to your budget and before you lift the lid on the bin, ask yourself "can I create something delicious using those leftovers?", you'll soon be developing your own recipes, eating healthier and saving money!
Get maximum value from the food you buy.
This means being inventive when using up leftovers, buying from basic supermarket ranges and "growing your own". Make a list for your weekly shop. Plan each of your meals with military precision for the week ahead and ensure you stick to it. It may sound a little "old fashioned" but a weekly visit to your butcher, baker, fishmonger and greengrocer will help ensure you only buy what you really need. Many times a visit to the supermarket will result in jars of exotic pickles, cream cakes and scented candles, all things that you can live happily without! Shopping online is a good way to buy only what you need as it means you will spend less time on the high street and avoid temptation!
Try not to throw anything away. Even leftover gravy and sauces can enrich pies, bakes and pasta sauces. Buy freezer bags and boxes. If you have leftover cheese, meat or biscuits for example, these can always be preserved through careful freezing for later use.
Think out of the box when preparing meals. Combine spices and herbs and avoid buying expensive sauces. For example, buy a large chicken and with the leftover meat create delicious meals such as Yuk Sung, a Chinese dish using mushrooms, hoi sin sauce and Chinese five spices! Meals such as Yuk Sung also satisfies cravings for buying expensive take-away and restaurant meals.
Why not grow your own herbs, vegetables or fruit. Even if you only have a window box, it's possible to grow fresh herbs avoiding the expense of buying pre-packed herbs!
Overhaul your household costs! Take a little time to search out the best mortgage deals, deposit accounts and home energy bills! Use online resources to seek out the best household suppliers. Businesses have to stay ahead of their competition in difficult times so they will often happily negotiate to keep you as a customer. If you don't ask, you don't get!
If your total annual food and household bills are around £5000, a saving of 20% makes an extra £1000 income per annum, (a lot easier than taking a second job).
