Behind the scenes when a file is deleted

Inside Hard DriveAll storage devices like Hard Drive, External USB drive, FireWire Drive, Flash Memory Cards, iPods etc. have an internal mechanism to manage data, which is called File System. File deleted over Windows, Mac or any other system has similar effect to the actual data stored in the storage device.

When a file is deleted only the pointer, which refers to its actual store location, is removed and the parts or the whole data remains stored in the disk. To actually delete a file, the locations where it is stored must be removed or scrambled in such a fashion that it is unreadable. However, over a period after deletion of a file, chances remain that space occupied by deleted data can be reused the operating system to store new files. This process is generally referred to as "Overwriting"

Precautions

Therefore, if after deleting a file you must do these things to avoid overwriting by the operating system.
  • Avoid saving new files on the partition / volume from where file has been deleted
  • If it is an active / booting partition, you must immediately switch off the PC. The active partition is continuously used by the operating system to store log files, work on several files and several other system files are in use.
