The Problem of Recovering Deleted Files on Mac

Quite a common situation for any Mac user is to delete a file (folder) and to discover that there is a need for that later on. Sometimes the need is so urgent that you start blaming OS X for not having an in-built tool for restoring the contents of a cleaned Trash.

The good news is there are data recovering apps for Mac OS, which can help you out in this case. Although not 100% guaranteed, but the chances that the lost data will be recovered are rather high.

Deleting Data on Mac OS X

To let you better understand the process and to predict the outcome of recovery we have made a quick notion-guide about Mac OS deleting operation

recover deleted files macThe first thing you should remember about removing the item on Mac is that dragging it over Trash deletes the file temporarily. In spite of the fact you don't find the entry for this file on the disk directory anymore, you still can restore it.

Note however, that the space that was once taken by the item is now labeled as "vacant" by the system. So, if you save new data to the drive, the recovery process will be somewhat more tricky.

So, tip #1 if you have deleted a file accidentally and would like to recover it: don't write anything new to the disk where the item in question was located. Ideally don't access this disk at all.

The second way you might have deleted a file is using 'Erase a drive' option of Apple's Disk Utility. Not the worst case if you haven't changed the default setting, which performs 'Quick Erase'. That operation rewrites the new empty disk directory over an old one. As a result the contents of the old directory stays intact and can be 'brought to life' unless it was written over.

Another option offered by Apple's Disk Utility is 'Secure Erase'. To tell the truth, it's the last thing one should use if there is a slightest chance that the data might be needed later on. There is no third-party tool which would be able to recover the data once this operation was applied.

Undeleting Data on Mac OS X

Now that you know about the process of deleting the files on Mac, let's find out how you can undo the deletion.

To start with, you need an app that you can rely upon most. And this app is Disk Drill.
Disk Drill
In general Disk Drill works in two stages: Scanning the disk - this will let you define if the lost file can be recovered and Recovery itself - this is what you can do once you discover your file can be recovered.

How Fast Can You Expect Results?

Sure, you want the result as quickly as possible.

But it is hardly to estimate the final time needed for recovery before you start it. Be prepared that with a damaged or out-of-date disk the process might take several hours, (or even days). Other conditions that will influence the recovery time are: the disk size, the number and size of the lost files, the state of the media, etc.
