Is It Time To Make Recovery From Addictions Your Life Goal?

I knew I had a drug and alcohol problem. No question about it. My real problem was it was never the right time to give them up. I mean you should party hearty when you're young, right?

I used to call that my 'Get Hit By The Bus Theory'

There is one big flaw there...read on...

Honesty In Addiction Recovery

I think getting honest about recovery can actually be called Step 0 in recovery.

Before we tackle anything else, is absolutely necessary to get completely honest.

Why? So we can accurately define our problem. Dishonesty often becomes a way of life for most people engaged in addictive behavior. We lie to ourselves and others about our behaviors our feelings and our use. We construct what is almost a fantasy land of lies and self deception to enable andpermit us to continue to use.

Even in active addiction recovery, it is tough to break those old habits of self deception and lying. Dishonesty can often become woven into the very fabric of our lives. Not only do we fear being found out in our deceptions, but there is a great deal of fear associated with actually telling the truth. The Catch-22 here is that you cannot enter a meaningful recovery while practicing lies and self deception.

The first person you have to start telling the truth with is yourself. The kind of truth where you go into the bathroom close the door behind you look yourself right in the eyes in the mirror and ask some questions. Am I really ready to commit to this? Have I suffered enough? When you get some honest answers to questions such as those, you can truly enter into addiction recovery with a good foundation in place.

Time To Start Recovery From Addictions?

Many people justify their drug and alcohol use by the 'I could get hit by a bus tomorrow' theory. This means party hearty today because who knows what tomorrow brings.

Carpe Diem, seize the day, live for the moment.

Unfortunately, this is not path to the actualization of long-term plans, stable relationships and career growth.

This was one of my rationalizations for continuing alcohol and drug use. It perfectly illustrated 3 tenets of the [tag-tec]addictive mindset[/tag-tec]:

1. Instant gratification - I want what I want when I want it, and that is now.

2. Poor impulse control - just think about that one, I'll buy an eight ball, do half today and half tomorrow. Yeah, right.

3. Problem-solving skills - ignore it and hope it goes away.

I remember many times thinking I'll party until I'm 25 years old and then quit get a good job and become an adult. After all, I could get hit by a bus at any time and die,  and I wanted to have fun while I was young. Then, when I hit 25 years old, I said I'm still young let's wait till I'm 30 before straighten out. By the time I hit 35, I figured it was too late to stop, and we were all put on this world to suffer and die. At this time I was actually hoping to get hit by a bus.

Many addicts like to weave this illusion that every aspect of their lives is exactly where it was when they first started using, which is masked by a veil of confusion. These tactics are all formed to protect their unattractive lifestyle. Self deception is only another form of denial (which is a co-dependent attribute) that manifests itself from the usage of abusive substances. There are plenty of other recreational activities that can help you lead a full & exciting life outside of getting either intoxicated or high. Honestly I don't believe that Horace, the creator of the expression "carpe diem," had doing addictive drugs or being belligerently drunk in mind when he wrote that. I'm sure he was only trying to put emphasis on making the most of current opportunities because life is short and time is fleeting. "Great lens, keep up the great work."

I agree that the first step to overcoming addiction is being honest with yourself. Overcoming something really does take a lot of introspection and decision-making because choosing to overcome addiction is basically choosing to change your lifestyle. I think this lens is helpful because it suggests mainly this, a personal, more wholistic way to approach recovery from addiction.

Drug Addiction Treatment: Do You Need It?

You mayhave already answered your question, when you get to the point of asking if you may need treatment for your drug addiction.

One thing about people who have become chemically dependent is that they want to continue to use drugs in increasing quantities, for as long as possible. They will rationalize it in any way, including by making up fantasies and stories. All of this is done to reassure themselves that it is alright to continue on with drug abuse. .

When drug addiction starts to lose appeal, eventually the stories and fantasies that drug abusers have surrounded themselves lose crediblility. At some point reality will set in.

The drugs get to the point that they no longer work, or the user becomes aware that he or she has needs more and more every day. When they're not using, they are sicker and sicker and the time between drug use episodes has gotten shorter and shorter. These can be indicators of normal drug addiction symptoms such as tolerance and withdrawal.

The urge to continue the drug use is still there as strong as ever but they can no longer convince themselves that they're not hurting people around them. It is very frightening. They know they're destroying themselves and everyone around them yet the pull from inside, the gut wrenching stomach level twisting, is to go use the drug, at any cost.

Requirement and fixation are some of the personality traits of an addict. The intellectual decision to stop using by itself is not enough, If it were, they would stopped and nobody would be addicted to drugs and still taking them. You have to remember that while you are placing your addiction into remission by refraining from using, you are not cured, it in fact is only a solution. But to do that everyone needs help.

If a person wishes to seek treatment for drug addiction, my best advice is to start with an assessment by a trained expert.

Various levels and types of drug treatments are available, and you should choose one that is appropriate and effective for your own use. A competent assessment by an addiction professional will increase your chances on being matched to an appropriate drug addiction treatment program.
