What to consider when buying a GPS

This is a quick check list of things that should be considered before buying a GPS receiver; if you spot anything that is missing, let me know.

It might seem obvious but the most important thing to think about is exactly what you want to use it for. Do you want use a GPS for family "treasure hunts" and Geocaching? Are you a keen walker, do you just take short circular paths or are you in to long distance walks? Is your idea of recreation getting wet, do you feel cheated if when you get home the seat of your pants are still dry? Will you be climbing mountains and need an altimeter? Or will you only ever be using your GPS when in a vehicle?

The answer to this question will help you to define the specification that you need a GPS receiver to meet. Typical considerations will be:
  • Is it shockproof and does it matter?
  • Is it waterproof and does it matter?
  • What accuracy is needed?
  • Do you need a GPS that supports maps covering a specific region?
  • What is the battery life, how long will the unit remain working after being fully charged?
  • How big is the receiver?
  • How heavy is the receiver?
  • What is the cost?
  • Is there good customer support?
