Recycle Candle Scraps, don't throw them away

There is nothing better than walking into a room where a candle has been left to burn, and having the scent greet you at the door like an old friend.

While decorative and scented candles may be an attractive addition, unfortunately they don't seem to last very long. Soon all you're left with are scraps of wax in the bottom of the jar.

Have you ever wondered what to do with all the leftover bits and pieces? If so, then keep reading for some ideas to recycle and reuse it.

How To Make A Jar Candle

Jar candles are very easy to make, make great gifts, and you are only limited by your imagination!

Supplies Needed:

Scraps of wax or burned out candles

Melting Pot

Heat source

Clean jars or candle molds

Candle Wick

Instructions:

1. Separate the scraps by color.

2. Put the pieces over a heat source and melt them down.

3. Once melted, remove all of the wicks and wick tabs from the melted wax.

4. If there is a lot of debris still in the wax, you can filter it through a strainer.

5. Pour wax into clean jar.

6. Center wick in jar.

7. Once the wax has been allowed to set, light and enjoy!

Make Decorative Bottles

Glass bottles and other glass containers are absolutely beautiful when coated with dripping candle wax in a rainbow of colors.

Drizzle various colors of leftover melted candles down the sides of a glass bottle or glass container. The finished container can be used to hold a single stick candle, pillar candle, or artificial flowers.

This is a great book that promotes creative thinking. In it, you'll see new uses for ordinary, everyday containers.

Make Fire Starters

Take cardboard egg cartons and fill the empty spaces with dryer lint. With the wax in liquid form, pour it over the lint.

The egg carton can then be broken into pieces and used to start bonfires.

These fire starters smell great as they burn and seem to keep the fire going better if the wood is a bit damp.

Tips To Recycle Candle Wax

Candles serve many purposes in our households, but after they've burned out, what do you do with them? Do they still hold any value?

Before deciding to throw them away, here are some useful tips on how to recycle that used candle wax.

Use a broad-based candle as a pincushion. The wax helps pins and needles glide through fabric.

Weatherproof mailing labels. After you address a package with a felt-tip marker, you can protect it against the elements by rubbing a white candle over what you've written. Rain and snow won't smear the address.

Let a child make "invisible art" by drawing a design on white paper with a white candle. Then cover the design with a watercolor wash. The image made by the candle is revealed because the wax will not absorb any color.

Silence a squeaky door. Remove the offending door from its hinges and rub a candle over the hinge surfaces where they rub against one another.

Unstick a stubborn bureau or desk drawer. Pull the drawer out, rub a candle along the runners and replace it. This allows the drawer to glide more smoothly.

If you have a fireplace, you can make great fire starters by dipping pine cones in melted wax. Smells good, and it works great.

Here is a nice tip for recycling old candles; You can use an 'everlasting garden candle'. It is a metal cylinder filled with paraffin and an everlasting wick. You can put it in a bowl with no holes in it :-) and add old candle stumps. Works great! They are for sale at Ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/smarter_deals/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
    Have fun, Georgina.
