Each year, more than 100 million old and used cell phones are either put in a drawer or thrown away ending up in landfills. A cell phone battery contains heavy metals, lead, mercury, arsenic, etc. When sent to a landfill, these batteries break down quickly and pose a threat to the air and water supply. By recycling, fewer new phones need to be produced, there will be less impact on the gorillas' habitat in Africa and on our environment here at home.

2. Help a charity or a person in need.

For example, old cell phones can be donated and functioning phones can then be designated as 911 phones to those in need, such as victims of domestic violence. There are literally hundreds of organizations that can benefit from the donation of old and used cell phones.

Either way, recycling cell phones will help save the environment by preventing the phones from filling up landfills and potentially leaking toxic chemicals they contain such as arsenic, lead and zinc, or save lives by donating them to those who need them most.

3. Create an additional full or part-time income for yourself.
