As part of my business I often recycle bicycles. Some bicycle get rebuilt and end up back on the road, others are stripped for usable spares and what's left goes to the scrap metal merchant.

I guess I ought to make a lens about that :-)

We recycle old electronics like crazy. I used to throw out old computers, but no more.
  • seedplanter Dec 3, 2011 @ 11:23 pm | delete
I'm heading off to tweet this one. It's much too valuable to not share! I loved the ideas for using bread twist-ties. Would have never thought of some of those. I have a feeling you could add to this list, too. What a great variety of items we can recycle. Prescription bottles are another one with good suggestion. Thanks!
  • rauspitz Nov 30, 2011 @ 6:45 pm | delete
BestBuy has a recycling program for old TVs under 32 inches. Bring it in and for $10.00 they take care of it and you get a $10.00 coupon you can use at BestBuy. I have used their program and got rid of an old TV and saved $$$$$$$$ on a Blu-Ray.

An excellent lens. There is so much we use today that can be recycled but is not and most of it people can get money for. In these tough times you would think people would pay more attention to that fact. Thank you for the lens.

  • stockysister Oct 28, 2011 @ 9:22 am | delete
This is GREAT information. I'm definitely going to be coming back to this lens. I just hate throwing things away when they could be recycled or reused. What about clamshell plastic cases? I try to avoid them, but can they be recycled? I tried to look at the "http://hubpages.com/hub/recycle-plastic" link, but it won't load (at least not on my *ahemworkcomputerahem*).
  • biggking Oct 26, 2011 @ 11:09 pm | delete
What most people do not know is that you can also recycle your car. If you were to either Google it or find someone local, they can dispose of your junk or unwanted vehicle quickly and in a matter that is safe for the environment.

Since technology improves so quickly, computer hardware becomes outdated in a very short period of time. As people buy newer and better electronics, landfills are becoming overrun with this type of garbage. Besides the space being taken up by PCs, monitors, gaming devices and appliances, there are significant health risks created by simply throwing these everyday items away. An alternative to dumping is computer recycling.

Another place that may accept extra stuff are theaters, especially community/civic groups. Email a list of your goods to give away. They are often interested in large-ish amounts of fabric or working sewing machines, or costumes like old/vintage clothing, hats, shoes etc. Or old/vintage household items including furniture and lamps. Or construction tools and good material like full sheets of plywood or lumber, and extra good-condition paint. And sometimes the truly bizarre!

So many ways to recycle that I've never thought of - great lens! When my kids were smaller, I had them do all their play-dough fun on an old shower curtain. It was large enough to give them plenty of room, and when they were done I could just pick up the shower curtain and empty all the leftover bits in the trash. No more play-dough stuck to the floor!

too bad we cant recycle people.. instead of burying them, and putting them in a box, in the dirt somewhere, why not just leave the box out of it, and put them in the dirt!
  • Dietzster Oct 21, 2010 @ 5:52 am | delete
Great ideas. I recycle plastic grocery bags at the grocery store and give to local charity thrift stores and the library to use again. They are always grateful and thankful to receive them.

I buy recycled books and recycle them also.

Plastic drink bottles and other plastic containers, milk jugs, juice jugs, etc., can go to the recycle bags at our waste management facility. I live in a rural area so it is a private service to get rid of waste or the dump.

We also can recycle our cans, detergent bottles, newspaper, and cardboard there.

Our company reuses every shred of packing material included in shipments we receive in the shipments we send out to customers. It's amazing how much we would be taking to the recycling center otherwise. We also stamp a reminder on the boxes asking our customers to reuse them again! We've gotten lots of emails letting us know they don't mind getting their products in "slightly worn" boxes and mix & match packing materials!!
  • AdultAcneSystem Nov 1, 2010 @ 5:38 pm | delete
Thats awesome, I was doing the same thing in the company that I was working with, but like they idea of stamping, or a way of letting customers know that they can or should reuse the packing material.

I just have to say that it can pay to learn your types of plastic. The "type" is a number in the middle of the recycle symbol. Certain places only takes cetain types and too much of the other types can keep the whole batch from being recycled.

In Michigan (and some other states) we pay bottle deposits for our cans/bottles and if we return them we get the money back. I wish all states did this. I went from living in Michigan to Illinois and it is sickening how many pop cans, beer bottles, etc. you find at the side of the road. You definitely don't see this in Mi. Great lens.

This is an eye-opening lens that everyone should read! I make an effort to reduce the amount of "trash" I send to the landfill by recycling plastics, steel and aluminum cans, glass, paper, and anything I can either sell or give away.

There is so much more I and others can do to make recycling and reusing a more significant part of life. I am amazed when I take my trash out to the dumpster and see some of the things people throw away...bicycles, chairs, couches, toys, etc. If you can't sell those things in a yard sale, at least donate them to a charitable organization!

Great article. Don't forget to recycle your old fluorescent and compact fluorescent lightbulbs. There are many free available recycling centers in most municipalities, and some stores like Ikea and Home Depot will take them. Besides re-using the phosphors and glass, they also capture the mercury used, which is better for our landfills and the environment.

I very concise list and even adding in extra information to help make recylcing less about sending it off to getting recylced but more on resuing as well. One thing I think needs looked at worlwide is recycling plastic bags. Mostly we reuse them but that's mostly to send stuff to the dump in. Plastic bags are definately going to be the hardest ever to solve.

This is a great lens. I live in South Georgia and it is hot enough to cook a steak on the ground. We need to be more aware of our world. Now is the time to make a difference. Little changes like recycling by a large group can make a positive difference. Just look at the temperatures around the country and the world. It is getting scary. Please take a look at my lenses at give me a shout out.

This is a great lens! Funny how a few years back if you asked someone how "green" they were, they would have no idea what you were talking about! Now like everybody knows about being green, carbon emissions, and recycling! It's good everybody realized how we need to keep the earth clean before it is too late! I'm working on a lens about recycling and being green, and when I complete it I'll lensroll this lens to mine. 5 stars. One module that would be really cool to put on here would be the iGo Green Tip of the Day. I have that on most of my pages and on my websites www.infoaboutpets.com and www.wonderfulwildlife.com. That would give people even more great green tips! Have a great day! :)

Hey, #1! Way to go girl, you have a great lens. We will be getting more wind turbins in North Dakota, its a great state to have them as we do have wind.

    Have a great summer!

Thank you, I had been wondering forever what I should do about my (four) old pairs of glasses. My eyesight has gotten so much worse over the years, but I'm glad to hear my old glasses can help someone else out!
  • roamingrosie Jun 9, 2009 @ 9:24 am | delete
Great lens! I had no idea some of those things could be recycled, like VHS tapes. Good advice on re-purposing items, too!

    Great lens and ideas!
  • nofatlegs Jun 7, 2009 @ 6:35 am | delete
wow, many of them did not even enter my mind. You do not think about "bread twist" tie stuff as something you can recycle. I just throw them away! what an eye opener.
  • lou16 Jun 6, 2009 @ 7:20 pm | delete
Great lens, good information and well set out - the list would be a good idea for people to copy and print as a reminder before throwing items away.
  • Katie Jun 5, 2009 @ 8:00 pm | delete

  • jeffwend May 31, 2009 @ 10:44 pm | delete
You are right about bricks. For a while in the 80's there was a problem in Detroit about people steeling bricks from the old buildings and reselling them.
Excellent lens, 5* and an angel blessing.
