Over 300 Million ink cartridges are thrown into landfills every year

That is nearly One Million Ink Cartridges per Day! That figure is unacceptable!

In order to reduce the number of ink cartridges that end up in the trash we need to recycle them.

The good news? Each year approximately 20 million ink cartridges are being recycled.

The bad news? That is still only 10% of the 200 million ink cartridges purchased each year.

There is good news, though. With your help we can increase the number of ink cartridges that are recycled each year.

Guess what? You don't have to do it just so you can feel good about making the earth a better place. You can also make a little money for yourself, your charitable organization, church group, or any other organization just by recycling ink cartridges.

Not too shabby.

Facts about the damage caused by tossing ink cartridges in the trash

Why You Should Recycle Ink Cartridges

Approximately 120 Million tons of waste each year can be kept out of landfills just by recycling ink and laser toner cartridges.

About 3 Quarts of oil are burned to produce a brand new ink cartridge. We all know how we need to reduce our dependence on oil. Recycling ink cartridges is one more way to accomplish that.

The plastic in the typical ink cartridge takes about 1,000 years (yep, that is years) to decompose.

Recycling ink cartridges not only helps the environment, but it also saves money and lowers energy consumption.

This is an easy way to make the world just a little bit better for future generations.

Get paid up to $4 for each accepted ink cartridge you recycle

Receive $2 for most cartridges

Special Note:
As of August 6th ink cartridges sent in the postage paid bags will receive $1 per accepted cartridge. The increased postage rates and people sending in damaged cartridges or those not on the list are the reason for the decreased payout.

You can still receive $2 for each accepted cartridge if you collect a number of them and ship them in a box via a prepaid FedEx label.

When you sign up for out ink cartridge recycling program you are guaranteed to receive at least $2 per accepted ink cartridge and sometimes up to $4 for ink cartridges that are more in demand at certain times.

How much do I need to earn to get paid?
Some recycling programs require you to reach a minimum balance (usually $20 to $50) before you actually receive the money your recycling efforts have generated.

Not with our program.

It does not matter if you only sent in one accepted cartridge during the month and have a balance of $2. You will still receive your payment (either through PayPal or by check - whichever you prefer) within 2-3 days of the 15th of every month.

For Example:
Say you just signed up and the only ink cartridges you sent in during March were the two that you had just used up for your printer. Both cartridges were accepted and at the end of March you had a balance of $4.

You can expect to be paid your March balance in April. Since the 15th of April falls on a Sunday you will most likely receive your payment (if using PayPal) on the 16th or 17th.

Those wishing to receive checks will have to wait for their payments to come through the mail.

How much will it cost me to recycle ink cartridges?

Nothing. Nada. Zero. Bupkis.

We've teamed up with Recycle Ink LLC in order to increase the amount of cartridges that are recycled each year. There is simply no charge.

Simply sign up through Blue Streak Ink and you will receive a 'welcome packet' email containing flyers, accepted ink cartridge list, and referral forms.

You will also be given login information to an information packed website where you can order additional supplies (all at no charge), edit your account info, as well as view your current collection figures.

In the mail you will receive a 'starter kit' that includes a supply of 100 postage paid bags and more.

I am recycling a ton of ink cartridges, can I ship them in a box?

Our ink cartridge recycling program strives to be as flexible as possible to meet the needs of its members. For those of you with a large volume of ink cartridges to send in we know that sending them 4 at a time in a recycling bag is a waste of time.

That is why we provide prepaid FedEx shipping labels for you to box up and ship ink cartridges. After joining our program, simply login to your Program Manager and request (at no charge) 5, 10, or 15 FedEx labels at a time.

Please reuse an empty box for shipping us your ink cartridges you may request one. All boxes that come to us are recycled and we ask that you do the same and reuse boxes.

You do not want to just dump a bunch of cartridges in a box and ship them. This greatly increases the odds that they will be damaged and we won't be able to recycle them and you won't receive money for them.

Ink Cartridge Packing Tips:

  • If possible, place cartridges in their original packaging.

  • Place larger cartridges on the bottom.

  • Use newspaper or cardboard between layers.

  • Place like cartridges (i.e. HP 57s) in one layer.

  • Use crumpled newspaper to fill gaps and any empty space.

  • Apply the prepaid FedEx label, detach the Shipper Receipt (includes a tracking number), and call the 800# to arrange FedEx to pick up your box.

Note:
While the company we use to run our ink cartridge recycling program is going through a merger we are unable to accept new members to our program. We will make an announcement when we can begin accepting new members again.

NOTE: We do NOT accept Epson cartridges. See the link provided in the "List of Accepted Ink Cartridges" section below for the most current list of accepted cartridges.

Also, this program is for U.S. residents only.

Note:
1-30-08 The company we previously worked with is no longer accepting ink cartridges. We will have the new ink cartridge recycling program up and running in 2-3 days.

1-30-08 The new list of Accepted Ink Cartridges will be out as soon as our new recycling program is up and running in 2-3 days.

If you are not recycling your ink cartridges, you are throwing money away!

Through our ink cartridge recycling program you are paid a minimum of $2 per cartridge that is accepted. So, if over 300 Million cartridges are being thrown away each year - that is like tossing over $600 Million dollars in the trash can!

Anyone out there willing to throw away millions of dollars?

Not me.

Ten ways to start collecting ink cartridges for recycling

Okay this sounds pretty good, but how do I collect ink cartridges?

Well it's rather simple, really. Here are some quick pointers.
  1. Hand out the postage paid collection bags to anyone you know who owns a printer.
  2. Get your place of work to put out a collection box for empty ink cartridges.
  3. Ask local churches if you can set out a collection box.
  4. See if you can insert the postage paid bags into the church bulletin.
  5. Sign up the PTA, band boosters, sports boosters, etc. at your local schools.
  6. Make a list of the different types of businesses in your area and try to put them in the order of who would most likely use up more ink cartridges on down to who would use the least.
  7. Arrange with local businesses to place a collection box and then let them know you will pick up the box for them on a scheduled (i.e. once a month) basis.
  8. Sign up the local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts (they don't just have to sell cookies to raise money), youth groups, etc. - you get the picture!
  9. Post flyers around the community at public bulletin boards.
  10. Insert a notice/ad in the local newspaper letting folks know where they can recycle their ink cartridges. Who knows, the paper might be interested in writing an article about your endeavors (free publicity for you).

About AllThingsMichigan

Born and raised in Michigan - the Great Lakes State.  I love how easy it is to set up a lens at Squidoo.  I get so many ideas for new lenses that I keep a notebook with me so I can jot down my ideas before I forget them.

I have been running businesses on the internet for the past several years and building lenses at Squidoo is the most fun I have had.  It allows me to be creative and share fun topics without the worries of SEO.

Squidoo is like the line from the movie Field of Dreams which I will paraphrase here, "If you build a quality lens, people will come."
