Do you Recycle?

Recycle, reuse and save. I can't say it often enough. Recycling those plastic bottles, milk and egg cartons and becoming more aware of the importance of knowing how to recycle can keep our planet clean. If you are getting ready to toss that gallon milk or water jug, stop. you can recycle and or reuse it. I can't begin to tell you how many totally reusable things I used to throw away without thinking about the money I can save by re-using them or how I can contribute to a cleaner planet. One day I read a tip about how to turn a milk jug into a scoop. Wow. Perfect for cat litter, if I had a cat. But then I thought about using one as a potting scoop for getting the dirt into my clay pots. That works.

I was visiting a friend who used a wine bottle as a salad dressing bottle. What a neat idea. Why didn't I think of that?

I've searched the Internet for ideas for reusing household products instead of recycling them or before you finally recycle them.

Great/Cheap Work Out Weights

Want to work out and need weights. You know you can use soup cans but how how about using your empty plastic milk or water bottle? Filled with sand, a gallon jug weighs about 10 lbs. The half gallon of course would be around 5lbs. They are easy to hold and I found that swinging them as I walk, the smaller ones of course, I started out with small coke cans and worked up to 1/2 gallon milk cartons. Haven't quite reached the 10lbs yet.

When You Travel--Plastic Bags are Priceless

Did You Know It Take 1000 years for Plastic Bags to Decompose in the Landfill?
I used to travel a lot--I was in the travel industry. It took me awhile, to learn how to pack well. Plastic bags were in my suitcase and carry-on. I put my shoes in them. I used them for my laundry and stuck a few in my purse to have handy if there was an unexpected rain shower. Popped over my head kept my hair dry. Also, when coming through Customs, I always had my Duty Free gifts in plastic bags to show the Custom Inspectors. Didn't have to root through my suitcase.

Plastic Bags and The Enviornment

According to the Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research group, "about 500 billion plastic bags are discarded around the world annually. It is estimated a traditional plastic bag will break down and dissolve over the course of 1,000 years".

Spring Is Coming - Are You Composting?

Spring is just a few months away and now is the time to get your composting going to fertilize those plants.

The All Seasons Indoor Composter kit is a unique, in-house system used to recycle kitchen scraps into an organic compost soil conditioner. The most effective method of fermenting is through anaerobic (without oxygen) fermentation.

Three aerated compartments enable kids to view the entire decomposition process clearly and make side-by-side comparisons between different materials.

We used to all laugh at my grandfather for collecting golf ballls evrytime we played but then each spring he would have a garage sale and sell the golf balls in egg cartons for $5 a dozen! He usually made $40 and prevented a few hundred balls from ever have being made.

We really focus on reducing, which for us means not buying packaged foods. For my kids lunches I make a real effort to use their thermoses and tupperware containers, rather than packaged stuff. Better for health as well. We also compost and recycle and have our garbage down to very little.

Bags are always recycled in our house. Handouts, junk mail, etc., all become notepaper for us, and we write on both sides of every sheet before it goes in the recycling bin.
