Some recycling tips for old shoes

In this age of awareness and wanting to recycle or reuse as many items that we can, this question arises. What can I do with my old shoes? Most recycling centers will not take old shoes. Shoes are generally made from multiple components which need to be handled differently in the recycling process.

I will offer some ideas for those old shoes laying around your closet floor or under your bed. Keeping old shoes out of landfills and finding new ways to use them is the "green" thing to do. You might be surprised at some of the ideas that I have come across to recycle or re-purpose your old shoes.

Bronze those Old Kids Shoes

Shoe Recycling Tip

This is not a new idea but it is still a cute concept for baby shoes and kids shoes.

You can have them bronzed and do a few different things with them. Some like to just keep them separate and sit on a dresser. You can have them mounted on a block of wood or marble. A frame can be added with a picture of the child for an enhanced look.

I've also seen these done as a pair of bookends. That idea would be so cute with a collection of children's books. Personally, I think bronzing a pair of high heel shoes and making them into bookends would also be a unique way to hold those books together.

Shoes from a small man's foot could be bronzed and used as pencil holders on a desk or for tools out in the garage.

Old Shoes Work In The Garage

Drill shoes onto the wall in your garage or workshop with the toes pointing downward and use to organize tools.

Old Shoes Make Fun Planters

A Re-Purpose Tip

old shoesI've seen this shoe recycling idea used many times in a garden or on a porch. Take those old shoes and make them into a planter. You will want to drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage and possibly put a few coats of polyurethane on the outside to avoid decay.

Place the shoe or shoes in a haphazard display in your garden or at the edge of your porch giving the impression that the shoes have laid there so long they sprouted growth.

I also saw an idea that I thought sounded pretty clever. Drill a pair or pairs of shoes onto a tree and make planters out of them. The idea was to make it look as if the shoes were walking down the tree trunk.

Old Shoes Get Organized

If you plan to keep your old shoes and not recycle or re-purpose them, at least get them organized in your closet. You can hang this organizer for your old shoes on your closet door giving you more floor space.

Shoe Pincushion

from old shoes

Baby and toddler shoes can easily be made into cute little pin cushions and are sweet ideas to give as a shower gift.

Use cotton filler that is used to make pillows and stuff it into the shoe. Cover the cotton with a contrasting fabric stuffed around the cotton and into the shoe. Embellish with bows or anything that will fit the style and color of the shoes. Stick a few sewing pins into it and you've got a pincushion.

Now, this is a little more difficult to do but you can make a pincushion out of a ladies shoe too. A high heel shoe made into a pincushion is perfect for the seamstress.

Old Shoes And The Homeless

Gather all of your old shoes into a bag and visit an area in your city where homeless people seem to congregate. Either place them near where they are or find one person to hand them over to. Adding socks to the mix might be a nice gesture too, especially in the colder months of the year.

Donate Your Shoes to Charity

Donated shoes should be in fairly good condition.

This isn't exactly a recycling program but I really like the charitable nature of this shoe company. For every pair of shoes that are purchased from TOMS another pair will be donated to a needy child. How awesome is that?

My Mom bronzed a pair of each of our baby shoes, a very sweet idea. I especially love your ideas for using those old shoes as pockets for tools and saving the ones in good condition to bring to people experiencing homelessness....the socks are a very nice addition to think about. Shoes can have a lot of miles and uses in them after we just don't care to wear them anymore...very creative and meaningful...blessed.

Bronzing old shoes sound like terrific idea. Same states for other uses of old stuff. Living in so consumerism aimed society we mostly just buy things when we need them and throw away when we don't need them anymore. We too often forget what can be done with some creativity. Well, I guess, speaking about imagination, sky is the limit, right?
