How To Make Recycled Valentine Cards

A Craft Of Love For The Kids, The Environment and Your Pocketbook

With two girls in school and in girls scouts I have a lot of valentine cards to buy. In the past I've looked for cards that are made of eco-friendly material, but this can be expensive. So, last year, already wanting to experiment with making homemade paper, my daughters and I set out to make homemade valentines cards. We used a papermaking kit we had and that I ordered off of ebay. The paper blender and the paper press sucked, but the moldings were perfect for what we needed to do. Why? Because one of the molds was heart shaped. Homemade heart shaped valentine cards was an idea and craft my girls loved.

Step By Step

1. Make sure you have plenty of space to work and some rags or sponges.
2. Soak the shredded paper for about an hour
3. Fill the blender half way with water (glue and food dye is optional)
4. Add a handful or two of soaked shredded paper into the blender (not to much or it will jam the blades)
5. Blend the paper until it becomes mush.
6. Empty mush into large square tray
7. Dip the mesh frame with heart shaped (heart shape on top) mold into the mush.
8. Gently lift the mesh frame with heart out of the tray. Let it stand there over the tray for a little while and let the water drain out of the mush inside the mold. Do not touch it!
9. When the water stops draining. Remove the mold. Don't touch the mush.
10. Grab a wide sponge or felt fabric, place it on top of the mush and then gently turn both over and lie down on the flat surface of a paper press or a page of a phone book so that the mesh from the mesh frame is now on top
11. Use another thicker sponge to gently rub against the mesh soaking up even more water.
12. When plenty dry gently lift the mesh off the heart shaped mush.
13. Place a felt sheet on top of the heat shaped mush and then close the paper press or the phonebook and let the pressure from these squeeze the water out and dry the mush.
14. Once dry remove the mush now sheet of paper and decorate
15. Take pictures and hand out

I had no idea that making your own paper was so easy...and very cool, love the review of the paper maker in your intro and see you were able to move on and innovate for success. I'm only sorry this didn't get a Valentine's Day feature, maybe next year! Your ideas could be adapted for cards all year around.

My grand daughters would definitely love to make this. I will have to pass this on to my daughter in law. Thanks for the great directions for the Valentine's day cards.

Magnificent! As a former elementary schoolteacher, I always disliked those store bought penny valentines and encouraged home made ones every chance I got, even offered prizes for most creative, etc. Later I did make home made ones with my sons when they were young and enjoyed it immensely - even though the boys lost interest quickly, didn't have near the artistic interest as mom. Very creative lens!
