The universal logo for recycling

In 1970 Gary Anderson, 23, who was a senior at the University of
Southern California in Los Angeles, won a contest with an entry that would come to be known worldwide as the symbol, or logo, for recycling.

Around the time of the first Earth Day in the spring of 1970, the Container Corporation of America sponsored a nationwide contest to come up with a design that would represent the process of recycling paper. The contest was for high school and college art and design students, and the three winning entries would receive tuition at the college of their choosing. Over 500 entries were submitted and the winning entry designed by Gary Anderson, was inspired by the Mobius Strip, made famous by M.C. Escher.

What is a Mobius Strip?

... and how can I make one?

The Mobius Strip, discovered by August Ferdinand Mobius, is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component

How do you make one?

Cut a strip of paper, twist it once, and tape the ends together.

You now have a Mobius Strip.

If you take a pen and begin to draw a line down one side, you will be able to continue around the entire strip and come back to where you started. Cool huh!

Who is M.C. Escher

... and what does he have to do with the mobius strip?

M.C. Escher is a dutch graphic artist who became famous for his mathematcal artwork.

His Ants on a Mobius Strip below is credited for making the Mobius Strip more widely known.

The logo belongs in the public domain

Once the logo began to be promoted by the Container Corporation of America, it quickly became an identifiable symbol used for recycling. The CCA attempted to trademark the symbol however the application was challenged and as a result the symbol, which is now recognizable worldwide, fell into the public domain.

""One thing is certain:
It seems to belong to everybody - and
that is fine with me"

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Recycling is just one way to avoid excess waste.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle has become a catchphrase due to the importance of all three steps in the quest to create a less wasteful society.

Recycling is great, but don't forget to:

Reduce - Only buy what you need, and encourage companies to use less packaging.

Reuse - Let's turn back the clock and start to reuse much of what we have. Turn it into something else, mend or find another use. Use cloth bags instead of disposable.
