Recycling at Home

At First

When my husband and I bought our 30 year old home a few years ago we made a stop at the water company to set up our water. There the person setting up our account told us we could pick up a recycling bin on our next visit. My husband and I looked at each other a little confused. Then I smiled. I was so excited to know that a recycling program existed in my neighborhood.

Unfortunately, I soon found out I was the only one on my street who took her recycling bin out on Wednesdays. No one else did.

Recycling at Home

Three Years Later

At first we were the only ones on the street to bring out our recycling bin, but it didn't stay that way. My next door neighbor, an elderly man with a young heart and mind, took an interest in the bin and began to ask questions? He then began to take out his bin on Wednesdays too. In fact, he often took initiative and took ours out if we forgot to.

Three years later, at least 7 people on our street have a recycling bin set out on Wednesdays. Sure 7 isn't a lot of progress in 3 years, but there are also more bins out on recycling day throughout the neighborhood. The way I see it, some progress is better than no progress and now the recycling truck doesn't have to make a trip on my street just for my bin anymore.

5 Easy Recycling Tips

1. Cut old t-shirts into large squares to use as cleaning rags.

2. Use the back of receipts as scratch paper.

3. Use egg cartons to plant seeds and watch seedlings grow.

4. Use old stockings to tie up plants in your garden.

5. Compost your kitchen scraps.

Important!

Reduce! Reduse! Reduce!

Reduce your waste. For new clothes swap with a friend or at a clothes swap meet. For new books check out books from the library or swap. For new furniture join freecycle. For new nick-knacks visit a resales shop, a thrift store, a flea market, or a consignment store. It may be used, but it doesn't mean it can't be reused. It saves you money and reduces was

Recycling Brings New Life and Art

One of the things I love most about recycling is how something that would have ended up in the trash is taken and recreated into something else, something creatively beautiful.

Stop Unwanted Mail

A good way to reduce waste is to help reduce unwanted mail. Unwanted mail is exactly what it sounds like. It is mail that is sent to you even though you don't want it. It includes items like: catalogs, fliers, credit card advertisements, etc.

You know it when you see it because you probably call it junk mail and it just ends up in the trash (or the recycle bin). We can talk later about how to recycle your junk mail, but the best thing to do for the environment is help reduce the production of unwanted mail. It will save trees, water, energy and prevent more waste from ending up in the landfill.

Help me get the word out to companies that it is not okay to send us unwanted junk mail. There are various ways to do this. We can contact the company directly via phone, email or mail and ask them to take us off their mailing list. We can follow the instructions at the websites below to remove us from specifics types of junk mail.

Do-it-yourself: Stop junk mail, email and phone calls
Junk mail may seem as inevitable as death and taxes, but with a little patience there are effective ways to tackle the problem. This guide provides clear, simple and proven reduction techniques. About 20 minutes investment now will clear the junk for between two and five years.
REMOVE YOURSELF FROM JUNK MAIL LISTS
Junk mail is more than a nuisance: unsolicited mail has a tremendous negative impact on the environment. At least 100 million trees are destroyed each year to produce junk mail, and 28 billion gallons of water are used to produce the paper. All of these resources are wasted to produce items many people don't even look at: about half of all junk mail is thrown out unopened or unread, and the rate of response to junk mail is less than 2 percent. The result is that more than 4 million tons of paper is wasted every year, according to the Native Forest Network (now known as the WildWest Institute).

Eco-friendly Houston

The City of Houston is working harder than ever to make Houston green. We have made a lot of progress, but more is needed. We need the help of every citizen of Houston to do their part. Trash To Treasure

Turning Trash into Treasure
That's the simple idea behind RecycleBank, the brainchild of two high-school science-lab partners and one of the "hottest plays" among venture-capital firms. In a word, or four, by "turning garbage to gold," RecycleBank has changed the economics of recycling. In cities and towns where it's operating, like Wilmington, Delaware, recycling rates have jumped tenfold, from 3 percent to 32 percent.
