Why Should We Recycle ?
In light of the USA's current solid waste disposal crisis, it's obvious that recycling can -and must- play a vital role in any future management of waste in this country. Whereas the idea was a fact of life hundreds of years ago, it had become an afterthought until in recent decades economic, environmental and susequent legal pressures have forced us to realize the benefits of this method of waste management.
DO YOU WANT THE RECYCLING-FACTS ?
How Important Is Recycling?
Recycling is an absolute priority in the United States; period. Fact, the United States recycles over 24% of its waste. This is the highest percentage amongst industrialized, first world countries. On the other-hand, the United States does producethe greatest amount of waste in the industrialized world. Recycling on this scale brings about economic and environmental benefits. The recycling industry has made vital contributions to both job creation and increased economic development within the United States. In 2000 alone, the recycling industry was responsible for more than 1.2 million jobs and a yearly payroll of more than $38 billion! An interesting statistic is that for every 10,000 tons of waste that is recycled, 36 new jobs are created; if you were to only incinerate the 10,000 tons of waste instead, one job alone would be created. Recycling industry employees are amongst the highest paid employees in the industrial sector.
Recycling helps prevent global climate changes by reducing dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions result from the fabrication, use and disposal of products. Greenhouse gas emissions are a part of nature and they help create climates that sustain life on earth. If greenhouse gas emissions reach dangerously high concentration levels, then rising global temperatures, increases in sea level and other climatic changes. Effective recycling will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the following ways:
1)Manufacturing paper, plastics, glass and metal from recycled materials requires much less energy than manufacturing these products from virgin materials. This is because the recycled materials have already been processed. For example, recycling aluminum cans saves 95 percent of the energy required to make new aluminum from virgin materials. Recycling steel and plastics requires 60 percent and 70 percent less energy, respectively. In 2005, recycling saved over 900 trillion BTUs, which is the same amount of energy used in 9 million households annually. This energy conservation results in less fossil fuels being burned. This means that less carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is released into the atmosphere.
2)Recycling also keeps materials out of landfill sites. This is vitally important as materials in landfill sites decomposes and releases methane gas. Methane gas is a greenhouse gas that is 25-30 times more dangerous to the environment than carbon dioxide. (Municipal solid waste landfill sites are responsible for 35% of methane gas emissions in the US!)
3)Combustion released from incinerators also releases greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Recycling can reduce this by keeping materials out of incinerators. In 2003, recycling kept 72 million tons of material from incinerators and landfills.
4)Trees combat global climate changes by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air into their wood in a process called carbon sequestration. If a ton of newspaper is recycled, 12 trees would be spared. Recycling one ton of office paper would save 24 trees.

- I'm a dedicated recycler, but it's not always easy. My local recycling station just closed up with no notice. I have to pile the stuff up to make it worth driving further.

- My lovely hubby is a Landfill Gas expert, so we know how important recycling is for the environment, but we cannot believe how so many of our neighbours just stuff all their rubbish in black sacks to await collection by the local authority. Just because they can't be bothered to sort it. Grrrrrrr!
