Recycling Around the House

Ok, so you sort out your bottles, cans and newspapers for recycling... but are you aware of the hundreds of ways you can recycle common household products like coffee filters, silica gel packets, haircolor kits, cereal boxes and egg cartons?

The reason we should ALL want to do more to create less? Overflowing landfills, dying wildlife, erosion of natural habitats, quality of our drinking water... and most importantly, WE ARE the keepers of this earth.
And hey, not only is recycling good for the environment, it's good for your wallet too!

There's really a lot of ways to recycle. We all have to do our part in conserving resources and energy.

Our town's Santa Claus parade usually features some floats built from recycled containers. One year, an enormous snowman made from recycled "lunchables" containers.

We personally recycle everything we can - keep containers from single-serving snacks (jello, pudding, the 90 cal. pretzels and chips, etc.) to use for things like glue, mixing paints and small amounts of coloured icing. And I've been using medication bottles for garden seeds for years - I guess long before people started recycling for conscience instead of need. My dad was a great recycler from the time he was a kid ... I guess it's how they survived in 1930s. I still have some quilts made out of my mom's old dresses that my grandmother made, and one made out of my dad's old ties :)

I confess I have a room full of recycled "stuff" waiting to be made into useful things instead of going to the recycle center or the trash. I really ought to write about the weird projects I create from odd bits and trash ... Happy Earth Day!
