The RAF Red Arrows
The Red Arrows are the display team of the RAF. Established in 1964, they are a team of nine pilots flying BAe Hawk jets, which are manually controlled and have no onboard computers. Their trademark diamond formation is a regular sight at airshows around the country.

About the Red Arrows
The RAF's display team
After the war, quite a few RAF squadrons had their own display team. When the costs and the competion between squadrons began to cause problems these were amalgamated. The new team went through a variety of forms and names before settling on the Red Arrows and its current 9-man formation.
Originally they displayed in the Folland Gnat, but in the seventies this switched to the BAe Hawk which is still used today. The aircraft has no onboard computers - everything you see in a display is flown manually.
