To earn a red-band, a movie trailer's content must be considered R-rated. They can only be shown before movies which themselves are R-rated, or before NC-17 movies.

- Movie trailers or previews are film advertisements for films that will be exhibited in the future at a cinema, on whose screen they are shown. The term "trailer" comes from their having originally been shown at the end of a film programme. That practice did not last long, because patrons tended to leave the theater after the films ended, but the name has stuck. Trailers are now shown before the film (or the A movie in a double feature program) begins.

They didn't offer any specific feedback about an offending image or word (and indeed there were no graphic images or swear words included), but rather the very idea of child sexual abuse was cited, despite the MPAA having been provided a list of films to be targeted for trailer attachment that included only R rated films.

It used to be that trailers were always re-cut if they got the "red-band of death" rating so that they could be shown to a wider audience. But now, suddenly, they are reallly growing in popularity.
