In Praise of the Red Beanie

A true beanie is a red beanie

The first hat was a beanie. A sort of plant fibre weave worn on top of the head, either to keep the head warm and relatively dry or to contain a mop of hair, paleo-style. Beanies are still worn for the same reasons today.

I wear my knitted beanie as insulation against any slight damp rising from the river at dawn, and it compacts down to a convenient pocket size when the day warms up. My beanie hides tangles, knots and assorted stray hair bits, I can't do without my beanie in the morning. But it must be red! No other colour has the same cheerful effect.

One day I hope to find a red beanie by Dior.

The redness is all important

Red is the colour of fire and blood, and associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

It's an emotionally intense color. Red has very high visibility, which is why stop signs and fire equipment are painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage, online it's used for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons.

A red beanie pulled hurriedly onto my head at first light has the effect of firing me up, revving up my heart and generally making me feel in charge of things. All the symbolism of Mars, the God of War gets to me, I pick up positive feelings of action, confidence, courage, vitality.

Red also has a facade of glamour, the 'Lady in Red' look, and it's a great conversation starter too.

Let's face it - red is hot!

Both men and women can wear a beanie, and age is no barrier. Babies can wear a sweet little beanie as can their grandmothers - the only difference would be in the size.

If you must pull a beanie on your head, make it a good-looking one. Wear a pretty flower on the side, sport a jaunty little feather, go all out for pom-poms and bobbles, but make it red.

What do you think?

Should a beanie always be red?

Heck yes! What else could it be?

I love the color red. A red beanie makes sense to me.

badmsm says:

Red is the only color worth wearing.

Your Hobbit Hat is on it's way, hope you'll post a picture here. It's a slouchy hat, so you'll find a lot of cool ways to wear it.

Thanks, Susanna!

You've convinced me that red is the best color for a beanie.

Heck no! What's wrong with black? Or yellow?

MagicBeanDip says:

Love red, but there are times when other colors call to me. It would just be wrong and inconsiderate to ignore them. :)

Cool lens. I think a pink beanie would be great!!

grannysage says:

I love the idea but when I am old I shall wear purple!
