Red Hill General Store

What is Red Hill General Store?

Red Hill General Store is a small town country store that embodies the values that America was built on:

Hard Work
Common Sense
Education
Caring for Others

Red Hill began as a small internet retail company in 1998 and now has over 10 retail websites and 2 brick and mortar locations. One nestled in the sleepy town of Hillsville, Va and the other in the bustling city of Raleigh, NC. While the locations are definitely different, the same values are practiced at each location. And it makes a difference to the customers that shop at these stores owned by Tom Largen.

Largen explains what fascinates him about small, local businesses, "It's not just a person working there. It is a person who has an interest and purpose who believes in the products." Largen and Michelle Cook, the Hillsville store manager, are developing a rapport with local residents typically seen only in small businesses. "When people walk in the door, instead of heading right to the product, they open the door and say, "Hey Michelle, Hey Tom,'" Largen explains. It is the small businesses that provide genuine customer service, because the management has time to care about individual customers.

Why Does Red Hill Rock?

Because they do, this is true!

Red Hill Veggie StyleRed Hill not only offers great customer service, but they also get involved with the community in a variety of ways. This is apparent with their Wind Turbine in Fancy Gap, VA, the garden that they had at their Raleigh, NC location in the summer of 2011, and more recently, Red Hill began offering farm fresh foods and locally made foods at their retail store in Raleigh, NC.

These foods include grass fed beef, cage free farm raised chicken eggs, and cheeses from Ashe County Cheese. Red Hill General Store is getting back to their roots and helping people who want to do the same learn how to do it.

Red Hill's Wind Turbine

It get's windy here sometimes...

Red Hill Wind TurbineThe wind turbine in Fancy Gap, VA was raised in the summer of 2010 on Gary Horton's farm. In a way it is a step backwards to take a step forwards towards energy freedom. The area of Fancy Gap and Carroll County once saw many homes powered by windchargers in past decades, before hooking up to power lines was an option to everyone in the area.

To read more about the wind turbine raising visit Christopher Brooke's article at: http://www.gazettevirginian.com/index.php/news/34-news/1455-red-hill-holds-a-windmill-raising or visit Red Hill's own wind turbine page at: http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/energy/redhillenergywind.htm

Raleigh Garden

Inspiring others to grow.

Beginning of Red Hill's Raleigh GardenIn his news article about the Red Hill Raleigh Garden, Alex Granados says about Red Hill, "When I met Largen, I got a sense of a guy who is not just operating a business, but spreading a lifestyle - a lifestyle you might have seen back in the days when general stores were more prevalent...Red Hill General Store is bringing a little bit of the past into the present, it seems. And in the process, it's becoming a role model. Neighboring Nantucket Grill is growing its own vegetable garden. Largen even gave them some plants to help them get started."

This just makes me warm and happy inside. :) It's honestly so refreshing to hear about successful business people that are truly making an effort to showcase the benefits of sustainable living....it's hard enough to find businesses based around local networking, sustainability, and clean energy-- let alone learn that they are a very successful company! Great lens! Made my day!

Best regards - As a NC Organic Garden - I will definitely look to connect as my herbs/gardens get growing this year. Great to meet you.
