Red Queen Costume

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume

Although red hearts are normally associated with kindness and love, this queen is the opposite of good. She is not reasonable, mean, nasty, and short tempered. The Red Queen rules Wonderland with her strict ways. One of her favorite quotes is, "off with their heads."

The Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland is based on pure fantasy and if you would like to break out of reality this Halloween, you can find plenty of options for every size and budget. Here are some ways you can make your own Red Queen costume.

The Red Dress

Queen of HeartsStart with a red dress. An old dress from your closet, a thrift store or a discount store will do just fine. For the royal look get a formal or floor-length red dress, ideally made of taffeta, satin or other stiff material. Use a hot glue gun to make your dress look really royal by gluing some imitation stones or tiny mirrors to the bosom and hem. If you have a stud stapler, stud your dress with decorative rhinestones. Cut hearts out of white and/or black satin cloth and sew the hearts to the skirt. Stitch lace trim on the bottom of the skirt. Embellish with more lace, jewel-like beads and hearts to dress the gown up for a one-of-a-kind costume. Fluff up the bottom of your gown by adding some tulle to the underneath of it. Add a pair of elbow-length red gloves. Spray paint a pair of old shoes and add glitter all over them for a rich effect. Add a costume jewelry crown into a stylish up-do with your own hair or a wig.

"Off with your head!"

Card Collar

Playing CardsThe final touch for the dress is a royal collar made of cards, which will really pull this Queen of Hearts costume together. Glue cards together in a circular shape with about one-third of the circle open. This shape should fit around your neck and the edges should hang over the dress a bit. Use the alternating pattern of red-black-red-black again. Widen the collar by gluing more rows of cards to the collar.

"It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

Card Fan

Make a fan from playing cards to wear with your Queen of Hearts costume. Start by gluing three cards together fanned out. Alternate the colors, red, black and red. After you've glued the three together, tuck another row, this time of five cards, behind it and higher. Make sure the cards are all facing the same way. Keep the colors alternating, red, black and red. After the second row is secure, add a third and a fourth row, each with more cards than the previous row. Make the fan large enough to use but not so large you can't hold it.

Red Queen Makeup

Red Queen Face:

Use the fairest foundation you can find. Apply it to your entire face, beneath your eyes, over your lips, and any skin that may be exposed with your gown's neckline. Set with powder to make sure that your makeup lasts all night. If you need more coverage for your under-eye area, apply concealer on top of the powder.

Red Queen Eyes:

For this look you will need to disguise your eyebrows. You can purchase specialized products to cover your natural brows, but they are difficult to remove. An easy alternative is to brush a non-toxic glue stick through the brow in the direction that the hair grows and make it smooth with an eyebrow comb. Your eyebrows will look really weird, but will lay flat against your head. Wait for the glue to dry and do a few more passes to get them nice and flat. Set it with powder then repeat if you have more hair to disguise. This works best for natural brows. Freshly waxed brows have a stark transition that's harder to cover.

For the Red Queen's blue eye shadow, use a Sky Blue color. You can use blue eyeshadow or blue cream makeup. Outline the shape for the eye shadow: draw a line from each corner of your eye, up to and past the corners of your brow. Connect the two lines with a rounded shape that mimic an eyebrow. (Drawing this "brow" shape now will save time later.) The top of the eye shadow shape should be wider than your natural brows and should also lift up toward the center of your forehead.

Fill in your outlined shape with the blue color.

To create the eyebrows, use the top of the blue shadow as a guide and trace it with a black liner.

For the eyeliner, draw a nice, thin line across the top rim of your upper eyelid (from the outer corner to the inner corner) using black eyeliner. Use a white liner across the bottom waterline of your eye.

Red Queen Lips:

Use Red Lip Liner to draw the outline of a heart on your lips.

Red Queen Beauty Mark:

To create the beauty mark, draw a spot using water proof liquid eyeliner under the left eye. Use baby oil to remove it with ease.
