Red Ring of Death Solution (X-Clamp Fix)

You turn on your Xbox 360 only to discover three flashing red lights around the power button. The red ring of death has happened to you.

If you're experiencing the red ring of death, there are any number of things that could be wrong with your Xbox 360. However, the most common cause of the red ring of death is GPU and/or CPU failure resulting from overheating.

Okay, here's a short explanation of what kills most Xbox 360s.

The x-clamps that hold the heatsinks to the CPU and GPU don't function properly. The heatsinks are not tightly clamped to the CPU and GPU so they don't dissipate the heat adequately.

The chips overheat and the motherboard warps a little and disconnects from the chips. You may have intermittent problems such as freeze-ups prior to the red ring of death as the process of heating and cooling slowly begins destroying these connections.

If your Xbox 360 is still under warranty, call Microsoft. If it's not under warranty, it's going to cost you about $150 and 4 to 6 weeks to send it off to Microsoft to get it fixed. However, there is a better way: you can fix the red ring of death yourself.

Important: opening your Xbox 360 will void the warranty. Do not proceed if you're not comfortable with this.

Step 1: Purchase An Xbox 360 X-Clamp Repair Kit

Step 2: Open Your Xbox 360 

When your x-clamp repair kit arrives, it will either have complete, printed instructions included, or it will contain a website link to complete instructions. These instructions contain photos and are easy to read and understand. Just follow the instructions for opening your Xbox 360 console.

Step 3: Replace the Hardware on the X-Clamps

Step 4: Reassemble Your Xbox 360 

Follow the instructions that come with your x-clamp kit and put your Xbox 360 back together. Plug it in, turn it on, and start playing your favorite game!
