Red Velvet Cake Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 Pinch of salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons natural cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter
- softened
- 1 1/2cups granulated sugar
- Frosting:
- 16 tablespoons unsalted butter
- softened
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 16 ounces cream cheese
- cut into 8 pieces
- softened
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 Pinch salt
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350F. using a cooking spray, grease and flour two 9" pans. Remove excess flour.
2. In a huge bowl, pour the flour, baking soda and pinch of salt. Whisk together.
3. In a smaller bowl, add buttermilk, white vinegar, vanilla extract and 2 large eggs. Whisk together to make an egg mixture.
4. In a separate small bowl, mix together cocoa powder and the red food coloring. Whisk and combine until creamy.
5. In an electric mixer, mix together the butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy.
6. Take 1/3 of the flour mixture and half of the egg mixture and pour into the electric mixer bowl. Whisk the mixture together.
7. While mixing, add half of the remaining flour mixture and the egg mixture in a medium to high speed.
8. Then add the coloring mixture and mix for 30 seconds or until well mixed.
9. Pour mixture into the two 9" grease pans and bake for 25 minutes or when toothpick inserted comes out clean.
FOR THE FROSTING
10. To make the frosting, add the confectioner's sugar and 2 sticks of softened butter in an electric mixer. Whisk together until creamy.
11. While mixing, add 16 ounce of cream cheese at about a quarter at a time.
12. Add the vanilla extract and pinch of salt and mix for 30 seconds. Cover and refrigerate until cake is ready.
13. When cake is ready, flip it and transfer it to a cake plate.
14. Place 2 cups of icing on top of the cake and spread evenly on top of the cake.
15. To make the second layer, put the second cake on top of the frosted cake.
16. Place the remaining frosting on top of the second layer and spread evenly.
17. Fill the edges with icing too. Enjoy!
