The Bedroom of My Dreams

Ranked #18,154 in Home & Garden, #260,697 overall

Right now my bedroom is cozy and comfortable, but plain. I've been meaning for a few years now to decorate it, but something in me is holding back, afraid to make a commitment and show my character in this very private space of mine. So I go on sleeping there year after year with the same furniture, the same plain white walls, the same comforter, the same color scheme. It's comfortable, but something is missing.

About my home

I don't like a lot of fussy details or ornate decor in my home. The rest of my house is low-key Art Deco style with dark oak wood trim, Tiffany lamps, and big cozy pieces of furniture. I want my bedroom to complement this but still have a feminine touch. No lace curtains, ruffles, or prissy colors. I want a bedroom that my boyfriend can wake up in without feeling out of place, yet know as soon as he opens his eyes that he's at my house, not his.

My current home improvement project is...

Make my dull-looking bed into a superstar.

There's not much to work with as things stand now. The king size bed has to stay, even though it's too big for the room-it's partly for my boyfriend, who is a big guy, but even if we weren't together, I'd sleep on a king. Having an enormous bed is like having a separate little room within my bedroom to curl up in and be cozy. The mattress is OK. It's an old but top of the line Simmons and will last a few more years. When I replace it, I'm considering an organic mattress, because more and more I'm reading about all the unsafe chemicals that go into a regular mattress.

I'd like to move the bed a bit closer to the floor, but not too close. I've looked at platform beds and decided they're too sterile looking for my taste, but I like the idea of having storage drawers under the frame, instead of a useless space for trapping dust bunnies.

Readers: Do you work on your home, or leave that to the pros?

I’m not a big fan of the professional decorating style, which always seems to be more intended to impress guests than create a room I can live in every day.

Do you think a professional decorator is a good investment?

They know way more than an amateur ever will.

They cost too much.
