So? How to Choose Your Red According to Your Skin Tone?

The chart below gives an indication of what might look good on you.

All Skin Tones: True primary red - ie. The classic London Bus colour. Although some argue that true reds still work best on pale skins.

You Are Not Wearing Red Lipstick Yet? Learn How to Wear Red!!

You will need:

  • lip brush

  • lipstick in your chosen shade

  • tissue for blotting

The rules

If you are wearing red lipstick, keep the rest of your make-up neutral, avoid red lip liner as it is outdated, and avoid lip gloss on top of red lipstick. When choosing colours, a general rule is that orangey reds work for everyone, and pinker reds suit darker skin tones. Bluey reds can make the teeth look grey.

Foundation and Primer

Apply foundation followed by a primer, this will help lock in the colour and is especially useful for older women whose lipstick tends to bleed into face lines.

Applying lipstick

Apply a thick layer of lipstick to the top lip before applying any to the bottom lip. Applying too much to your lower lip will make you look bottom heavy. If you think the look is too much for you, blot the lips with a tissue so that it looks more like a heavy stain. Complement your red lips with a peach blush on the cheeks.

10 Useful Tips for Wearing Red Lipstick

1.Consider the lighting. "If you're going to be outdoors, pick a softer or sheerer shade. For evening, go bolder, so your features stand out.

2. Avoid deep reds if you have thin lips. They tend to make lips look smaller.

3. Experiment with intense shades if you have strong coloring (paper-white skin, black hair, blue eyes). Natural contrast gives you more options.

4. Don't play up your eyes. Pair red lipstick with the lightest possible eye makeup. A little mascara and beige shadow will do.

5. Don't toss a red lipstick in a shade that doesn't work. Top it with a gold gloss to warm and soften it, or add a pink gloss to take it to the bluer side.

6. Coordinate your look by dotting a little smudge of lipstick on the apples of your cheeks, then blending it with your fingers.

7. Be precise, whether using a brush or applying straight from the tube. Red lipstick should never be applied casually in the back of a taxi.

8. Don't use red lip liner. If it doesn't match your lipstick perfectly (and odds are it won't), you'll end up with a two-tone effect. If you like using liner, find a shade that's close to your natural lip color and use it to outline your lips.

9. "Prevent "bleeding" by applying a little concealer around the border of your mouth.

10. Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess color.

That's the thing; I really want to wear red lipstick, but the thoughts of it ending up smeared across my face are none to appealing! Think I'll have to go with the long lasting stain instead.
